Hi guys,

I'm organizing a strength sports conference next June 2014 in the UK @ St. Mary's University College Twickenham and would like to ask you for some input on a couple of points.

The conference has a strength science track and 5 practical tracks, one for each iron sport: Weightlifting, Powerlifting, Strongman, Crossfit and Bodybuilding.
(Crossfit and Bodybuilding are not strength sports, of course, but they are cousin sports employing a number of strength sports' methods and techniques, so that's why we put them in).
Each of these tracks welcomes paper submissions and has its own specialist board. On top of this we'll have a bunch of practical seminars, workshops, keynotes and panels.

We're trying to get good UK coaches and athletes engaged in the project and I thought I'd ask you if you can recommend any names for any of the tracks. I know Sugden is big on Strongman, Powerlifting and Weightlifting, so I hope you have some ideas for these particular three.

Second topic is, for all you strength fans out there: what do you want to see covered in a seminar or keynote talk? Any aspect of Strongman, Weightlifting or Powerlifting in particular?

Made this message as short as I could, thanks for reading and for any input.

Just don't mention squat depth or gear!

Would have thought throwing/highland games would have more of a strength sport element?

Thanks for the input guys.

Throwing & HG is strength, for sure. Much more than BB or X-fit, not even worth discussing. The problem this time around was logistics, not logics :-). It's coming to the 2015 edition if ths first one goes well.

As for the controversial topics, will try to keep out of the gear & depth issues. Or we go all the way down the polemics route: :-)

a) BB
- natty vs "pro"
- why are most bodybuilders weak in proportion to their muscle size?

b) Powerlifting
- is PL gear cheating?
- alphabet soup feds
- squat depth
- bench press arch
- special deadlift bars

c) Weightlifting
- should we go back to 3-movement WL (i.e., including the Press as in before 1972)?
- Bulgarian vs Russian vs Chinese Methods

d) Strongman
- Should kit be standardized?
- Should the deadlifts lose the straps?
- Should there be WADA testing?

e) X-fit
- is X-fit really a sport?
- is there any planning behind the WODs?
- is there any transfer to other S&C realms or to things like military, etc...?

But then the conference would most probably become a fighting event and be assimilated into the MMA circuit. An entertaining thought though.

Thanks again.

I did a thesis on the biomechanics of the bench press and its effect on 1RM as part of my sports science degree. As soon as I saw SPSS, I knew what it was in reference to.

I have a powerlifting friend with a PhD in biomechanics, and he's published studies. He also lives in south London.

PM me your e-mail address as I'd be more than interested in helping as best I can Can't mention groups/forums on a public post.

Would be cool to do something on the biomechanics of sumo and conventional reads. I reckon 3,000 words should take no longer than 10 hours?

Get Vanilla Gorilla down to do a talk.
