Cheers mate!

Wales Strongest Man Under 105kg write up.

I only decided to enter the comp 4 weeks ago and have basically been going back and forth over whether I'd compete for the whole month, I've barely trained because of personal issues and getting ill and I just didn't feel ready but got convinced to do it anyway by my father so thanks Neil!

I was about 112kg a week out from the comp so had to cut carbs for the week leading up to to it and sweat a little in the morning but made it fairly comfortably. Loaded up on fluids and focused on rehydrating properly rather than food post weigh in and got back to 109ish before bed.

Woke up on the morning of the comp feeling surprisingly good considering how s**t I had been feeling the weeks before and had a 90 minute drive to the venue, drank some oats and just tried to tried to get focused.

Due to the Welsh organiser dropping out Trojan Fitness Bristol and Marc Cherry picked up the slack and decided to run it alongside Englands Most Powerful Man Under 105kg. This meant I was competeting against 18 other guys and they would then take the Welsh places in order in the overall standings. I preferred it as it meant more competition.

Unlike other comps I have done Trojans did a proper entrance for each athlete and you got to choose your own song, I had Black Tongue - Waste and it felt like the whole room was shaking! (go youtube them if you haven't heard)

Event One - 320kg for 20m
All I had in my head before this was go steady and don't drop it! All that however went out of the window when the ref said go and I just shot off. Had a great run and despite a slight wobble near the end finished the course in 8.6 seconds for a comfortable 1st place out of 19.

Event Two - 120kg log press for reps
Being last up I got to watch everyone go before me and I watched a lot of people struggle! The log seemed really narrow and a lot of guys struggled to clean it(this was comfirmed later in the Opens when Will Baggot failed 140 despite having a 170+ press in training).
Being in the last pair I knew anything over 3 would be good points so just decided to pace myself and try and not gas out. First 2 reps went up comfortably. 3rd rep I just got the down command off Eddie before I had a stumble so the rep counted, I re chalked and squeeked out another rep for a PB of 4 reps and 2nd place out of 19 in the event just behind the 90kg freak Rob Ward.

Event Three - Keg Loaded Squat
Was last but one up so again got to see everyone go before me. Fellow Welsh guys Nathan Szuchnik and Richie Allen were in the lead with 14 and 17 so I knew what to beat as I didn't think Rob would do more than that. Had a little wobble at the top of the first rep so adjusted my foot position at the top, reps felt comfortable up until the 10th rep or so at which point it started getting hard to breathe and felt super heavy. It's all a bit of a blur after that but I know I just kept going until I heard the ref say 18 and I racked it. Think the weight started at 180 and went up to about 280kg. Another 1st place.

Event Four - Keg Toss
I was panicing about this event all day having never done it before and being known for having terrible co-ordination and timing!
It was announced there wouldn't be split times so having seen only two guys finish it and two guys get 7 I decided to pace myself and just concentrate on getting the first 6 over. Surpringsly to me the first 6 went over quite well! The 7th however just felt way heavier and when I attempted it my glasses also flew off... I gave it a second attempt but it wasn't to be. Joint 5th our of 19.

3 point lead going into the final event over Nathan

Event Five - Atlas Stones 100-160
Last up again. Saw Nathan and Simon Thomas be the only guys to finish all 5 stones(with Simon being faster) so I knew that a quick 4 would seal the overall win so that's what I went for. I threw them up as quick as I could and the first 4 were comfortable. Re tacked and attempted the final stone, lapped it comfortably but couldn't quite lock out my legs to load it.
4th place out of 19(but I didn't know it at the time)

I then had a nervous wait as I didn't know how many guys had beat my time on 4 stones so wasn't sure at this point if I had done enough for the win.

Final Placings were then announced

3rd Simon Thomas
2nd Nathan Szuchnik
1st Me

Best actual comp day performance I've ever had(in terms of actually doing better in comp than in the gym) and can't wait to do Europes and Worlds now!

A couple of short videos on my instagram for now before Trojans puts up better videos next week I am sure!

perhaps the lack of prep did you some good, taking a more relaxed attitude and then using all your energy in the comp did you well.

wouldn't hurt to practice a brand new event once or twice before though Wink
