What sort of monitor have you got? Mine mucked about for a session or two not long ago and then just started working properly again for no apparent reason.

The HR monitor definitely isn't working properly. A while ago, the readings were considerably higher than they should have been, and now they are much lower than they should be. I'm using a PM4 monitor. I'm not overly bothered about the readings - I'm using pace as my guide, so I'm focusing on that during the row, which I much prefer to be honest.

Wednesday

Squat
147.5kg x 7, 7, 7, 7, 7

Bench press
95kg x 7, 7, 7, 7, 7

Wednesday p.m.

C2

20 mins 5186 1:55.6 21 126?

The last four minutes were 1141m 1:45.1 21 121 (but I'm going to ignore the HR readings for now). I think the battery might be going as it's struggling connecting to the monitor sometimes.

JT - I think I need some longer sessions on the erg. I'm going to start upping the 20 mins session in time.

Bim - thanks. I was thinking of doing the last 5 mins at 1:45 first, but the 2k under 7:00 at 20 SR is at the back of my mind for the future.

Friday

C2

Warm up
10 mins 2281 2:11.5 20
5 mins 1301 1:55.2 26

6 x 500m, 2 MR

1:41 30
1:40.9 30
1:40.8 29
1:40.8 30
1:40.9 27
1:40.8 30

No point putting the HRs because they were all stupidly low. I intended on sprinting the last 333m like usual on the last rep, but the monitor did that weird thing that kept happening to Bim a while ago and started off with the first reading really high, and it took me over 200m of going around 1:37-1:38 just to get it back down to 1:41 pace, and then hard it was hard work just holding onto that pace until the end. When I had finished, it felt like I had done with the usual sprint anyway. A bit annoying but still pleased overall.

Grin Well I'm glad it has happened to someone else! Very disheartening at the time though, so I feel bad for laughing. It's like it skips the first pull, which may not seem like much but on the shorter stuff it is! Nice 500's anyway, under 1:40 should be doable in not too long. A 1:45 pace 2k at 20SM would be an excellent effort.

Bim - it was quite alarming and not much fun, knowing I was working much harder than I should have been just to get a normal reading.

Jt - the 500s are definitely my favourites out of the various intervals I've done.

Saturday

Squat
157.5kg x 5, 5, 5, 5, 5, 5

Bench press
100kg x 5, 5, 5, 5, 5, 5

1 hour 15 mins MTB ride.

Cheers, JT. Building nice and steadily - just what I want.

Sunday

Wide grip chin-up
BW x 12
+15kg x 12
+30kg x 12

Seated press
50kg x 12
65kg x 12
80kg x 12

C2

Warm up
10 mins 2457 2:02.1 23

4 x 750m, 3 MR

2:34.2 750 1:42.8 29
2:34.2 750 1:42.8 30
2:34.3 750 1:42.8 30
2:31.9 750 1:41.2 34

I sprinted, very poorly, for the last 250m rather than the usual 333m. It made hardly any difference to my overall pace, so I'm going to knock that on the head for a while. The sessions, because of the reduced splits, are becoming enough of a challenge in isolation anyway! Good way to start the day!

I really didn't want to do the session and came up with a long list of reasons not to do it today. I feel so much better for it now though. I need to make the suffering part of my daily life and just get on with it. Grin

I have this quite a bit and usually end up thinking it easier to do it than use the excuses.

(it was the same every morning when I had a job)

Mental toughness plays a large part in success or not.

I am very aware of this, and I am also trying hard to improve my own.

My strategy was just to keep ignoring all the little voices and sit down on the rower and get it done. Once I started the warm up, I was fine. This is my takeaway for the future: just get on with it!
