What’s working, Billy?

Have you ever tried a rowing seat pad Jonny?

You’ve convinced me to buy one.

Tuesday

Bench press
97.5kg x 5, 5, 5, 5, 5, 5

Incline bench press
60kg x 8
80kg x 8
97.5kg x 5

Lying cable curl
40kg x 8
47.5kg x 5
42.5kg x 8

Dip
BW x 8

Just a quick session at lunchtime.

2 x 20 UT1 tomorrow morning, which is a step into the unknown. I’m pretty confident the first ‘rep’ will be fine. The second, on the other hand...

Thats great work JLL

I have strong inkling that pace is faster than UT1 especially the second, my experience is the first set/rep done at the top of UT1 then you have to drop the pace on the second to maintain HR

I will loan you the money for a HR monitor interest free

Cheers.

I think you're probably right. My HR would have been quite high at the end of the second rep, I'm sure. I was breathing heavily and sweating profusely.

I only went faster than my target pace (1:54.5) and the first rep on the second rep because I wanted to win the mental battle and go faster than my first rep, which I did.

I wouldn't like the idea of having to slow down mid rep just to keep my HR where I want it - it would feel like a loss. Now I feel positive and optimistic - could I have carried on without the rest and nailed a decent 10k? Who knows, but probably not yet.

Surely if my HR was too high I wouldn't be able to maintain the pace (you can only carry on above a certain HR % for a limited amount of time I remember from my Uni days)?

I appreciate your kind gesture, but it's payday tomorrow anyway. However, I am quite liking just hitting the target pace and stroke rate for now though without the extra factor of a HR monitor to have to think about. It keeps things nice and simple.

RE -read the rathburn thingy

The HR bands are there to give you maximum benefit from that type of workout, I think when you start straying upwards the benefits (LONG TERM) start to drop

What you mention about HR I think only applies to max flat out which UT1 and UT2 should not be

The urge to go faster is very hard to control, probably why I have never been very good at following a programme or reaping the LONG TERM benefits

I'll reread it again to see what it says about the pace and HR. I think from my last read, both were just guidelines.

I like to feel like I'm working hard, so going slower seems against my instinct even though we live and learn and get wiser with age. I'm still so new to it though and am going to make mistakes.
