I pulled out after three events to save my back from further damage.

I'll do a write-up later on this evening.

Well done on the comp nevertheless mate. The 3 events on the Vids were impressive. Was the Viking press 120kg in the hands? Shame you had to pull out.

Roger - thanks mate. TBH I was just glad to be back in the sport and 'competing' again - even if I was quite a long way off the pace of the top lads. no way the Viking was 120kg - they added even more than the planned weight on comp day but it was more like 95kg-ish in the hands.

Josh - some training adjustments are going to be made, but I'm going to keep some of the things I've been doing too. Need to figure out if I'm going to do another comp before September, then the plan can be put into action. Plenty of room for improvement when the rust has been properly blown off!

Boar - it was worth the effort. I plan to come back bigger (I cut 92.1kg to 89.9kg without even trying!) and stronger next year, with a full year of training under my belt. Finger was horrid with a dicky back!

thanks Wayne. I would have liked to complete the competition, but, well, I'll let you read on...

So my back had improved slightly and felt good to go on the Saturday. Then, like an idiot, I decided to do loads of stretching the night before the comp to loosen it off and ended up making it worse! Very tender overnight and on the morning of the comp. Not the best start.

I had a couple of 'dodgy' days on my diet in the week leading up to the comp (mental weakness) which meant I was 92.1kg the day before the comp. I had been almost 90kg on the dot the last few weeks prior. Anyway, I made weight (88.9kg) without any radical dehydration techniques, so could have come in 94kgish without any problem - I'll probably do this next year...

Went for some food then warmed up for the first event:

Viking Press '120kg'

Weight felt very light. Had no idea how many I'd done. top guys got 20 and I think I came 5th. I wasn't credited with the 16th rep, so got 15. I'm pretty happy with that TBH as I've not done much overhead work at all and know I can make big improvements in this area, so to not be too far off the pace was encouraging.

My back kept pinching on the lockout of each rep. Lots of foam rolling and stretching before the next event...

Frame hold 250kg

Roughly 36-37 seconds. 3rd place. top lads got 45-46 seconds. Never felt comfy from the start - couldn't stand fully upright as the back hurt. also, I must have dipped on blood sugar as I was seeing stars as soon as I picked it up. The whole thing was a struggle. Bad result for me.

Chocolate and more foam rolling ensued...

Fingal's Finger 200kg

5 reps. Two lads got 7 and two got 6. So 5th place. A really draining event - lack of event fitness showed here. Also, mega back pain when supporting the weight overhead. Started to figure out the technique a little bit towards the end i.e. keep the arms straight!, but it was too little too late (plus I was knackered by this time).

I was in 4th place (out of 7) at this point. Back wouldn't settle down at all now, despite loads of foam rolling, stretching etc. With yoke and max deadlift to go, I took the sensible option of leaving it there. I wouldn't have performed well in either of those events with my back the way it was, and could have set myself back months had I attempted to do them.

Felt weird being sensible for once!

Was a good day out. I enjoyed competing again and am already looking forward to my next comp, where I plan to make good improvements.

Get your back fixed. That's the only issue with your training.

Great to finally compete alongside you mate

I'm booked in for some physio next week.

I agree about the enjoyment aspect of competing with you - I was expecting you to be all angry and unsociable, but you were in good spirits - was good to see!
