At the European Masters' this week I enjoyed many an illuminating conversation with the great Andy Kerr. Andy has often described himself as 'Never the strongest, but stronger for longer'.

He told me that he did his first ever 300kg deadlift in 1972 and his last in 2007. Somewhere in the middle of these two dates he pulled a British record of 377.5kg. 35 years able to deadlift 300kg .......... that is impressive.

Any similar stories?

That is very impressive, I'm surprised he stopped complaining long enough to tell you, but it is impressive, seriously impressive

I haven't got the dates to mind but Dave Carter, President of the BPO (not the Leeds one) is still pulling well over 300kgs and would have been a contempory of Andy's back in the day, Dave hauled up an even bigger deadlift than Andy in his prime, about 380kgs from memory...another example of longevity in the sport, and contrary to popular belief how steroids are actually very good for you.

Littler Clean and jerked double body weight as a schoolboy, junior, senior AND master. 22 years after he first did it he’s still knocking on the door on a good day now, showing that even lemon freshness can endure. I dread to think how much porn he’s watched in that time too

I'm not sure Jón Páll Sigmarsson would agree with that.

Lol. Can't cope with all these compliments. Audacious punner I like. Bringing up a dead lifter in a deadlifting thread just seemed to demand a comment. Bryn must be a cannibal.

Not that long ago Ste Leigh did a RAW 500lb bench and mentioned that it was 25 years ago when he had first done it, not bad going!!! In addition to that he recently pulled a PB deadlift (307.5k??) at 47(?) year old, not only maintaining massive strength for 20-odd years but actually getting stronger!!!! And he's a f**kin nice bloke too, you've got to hate him Wink
