I was on a course in Manchester today, which was a f**king hike from Wiltshire. I found out where the Sugden Centre was and popped in, hoping to see someone I recognised. I know most guys on the site don't train there much, but I thought it was worth a try. Asked the orange-coloured girl on the desk if I could have a look around.

This is what I saw:

1) Some hot chicks on treadmills
2) A guy curling an unloaded olympic bar in the squat rack
3) A 'power room' with a number pad key that was locked
4) No one that I recognised
5) Better facilities than at my gym

It didn't seem to be exactly a jovial, friendly atmosphere, everybody looked as miserable as sin.

I did think about popping over to Adlington, but it was a step too far on top of my journey home.

I was in Widnes Thursday morning and Denton on Thursday afternoon and considered going up to Adders for a session after my meetings, however the call of a McFlurry was too strong so I ate and got back on the M6.

LOL. None of that surprises me. For the most part its a s**te place to train, but its a great place to be a pervert, and when its not too busy and you've got friends to train with it can occasionally be great.

What time were you there? I got in around 8pm. Spent the first half hour explaining to my mate who is a trainer there the folly of his belief that Floyd Mayweather would have beaten Thomas Hearns at welterweight, then lumbered into the gym at about half past eight. Didn't notice anyone there other than the usual preacher curl brigade and a group of wannabe gangstas who had sneaked in.

Tommy - I was in about 4:30.

Thomas Hearns was terrifying.

For 1. The hot chicks on the treadmills is a great plus point of the Sugden
2. These 'people' are the bane of my life
3. At this point last year I planned to try and get in that room to train but never got round to it.
4. Some of the people you might recognise have gone home for the summer
5. Sugden has its critics, its nothing compared to Olympic or Adders but its better than many commercial gyms.

Ah, if it had been a Tuesday (I think) you would have witnessed Joni embarking on his epic arm workout/yoga class double whammy. Hearns was a beast, although I must confess to having a man crush on Marvin Hagler and being unhealthily besotted with Roberto Duran too. Any of them would have brutalised Mayweather, I'm sure of that.

That would have been a pity, as there probably would have been nobody there and nothing to greet you but a locked door. Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, and most people are gone by not long after 6.

Your post should have stopped there. The beauty of Sugden.

Thomas Hearns would have brutally KO'd Floyd, he was giving Sugar Ray Leonard a very good run for his money, and Floyd has nowhere near the power, aggressive skills or finishing that Ray does.

I just took a look at some of Hearns' fights. The Hagler vs. Hearns fight in particular was brutal. Getting hit by Hearns' right hand must have been like being poked in the face with a scaffolding pole.

Watch vs Duran, vs Cuevas, both excellent fighters with solid chins who'd never been KO'd before.

I believe Alan is usually down by 2, and there would usually be people training by 3 at the latest. Bank holidays we tend to train 2-5.

In my own case I'm often training 5-7 or so when in good nick, but that means I'm often locking up!
