So i've snored like all my life, even as a kid I snored, it followed me into adulthood and never went away. Even nice and lean sporting a six pack at 15 stone, 16 years old I snored my head off.

As I have gotten older and larger my snoring has progressively got worse to the point where now it is full blown Sleep Apnoea.

Currently I have had to stop training, I am no longer recovering, I wake up feeling as shattered as I did when I went to sleep. I can fall asleep at anytime, any place, and was so close to falling asleep driving on the motorway the other day it was so scary. I momentarily fall asleep at work around 10 times a day and it's really starting to take it's toll on my health Blood pressure has gone from 130/80 to 156/95 in just 2 months of it getting worse.

Rather than f**k about waiting forever on the NHS I have decided to go private and so hopefully sometime this week will be having my sleep study and getting sorted with CPAP.

Does anyone else suffer from this? Anyone experience with CPAP? heard it can turn your life around in extreme cases, especially those suffering for a long time without ever realising.

Untreated its some scary stuff, I found this read particularly interesting on the subject :

I have some knowledge of this and a few other cardio respiratory conditions

Going off your user name and photo and talking in a very frank manner having read your post I think you really need to lose a lot of weight

What is your bodyfat %

How often do you do cardio?

Again if you have any die office questions either post them here or better still send me a private message!

Don't smoke
Don't drink
Still snore like a trooper 10 stone lighter.

Weight isn't everything, sure it contributes and don't get me wrong, I'm not naive, if my health calls for it then I will lean down some, sure I enjoy training for strongman but it's nothing more than a hobby. However I could lose 4 stone and still suffer mild-moderate Apnoea, I'd rather not suffer from it at all

I have an appointment on Thursday on the nhs, I'm having a camara down my nose and throat to see if there's any blockage ect. I'm expecting them to just tell me to lose weight and that'll be it though. It's gotton so bad now I can't even sleep in the same room as my fiancé, it's s**t.

That sucks dude, I really hope they come up with something better than just 'lose weight' It's such a cop out answer, sure it's the right answer for 90% of the snoring population but others like myself are just far more prone to it. As I mentioned before I used to keep my parents awake with my snoring at just 16 years old and I was a super athletic rugby league player back then sporting a 6 pack!

Lol, the username is just a bit of fun, don't read too much into it Happy

I couldn't say for definite but hazarding a realistic guess i'd say about 35% bf. yes its high. yes I will lose some as it will definitely HELP, however it will not cure it, this I know for fact because I have always suffered to some degree.

I only do low impact cardio such as walking, perhaps I need to get out of breath more, other than what I do in event training

I can only imagine how satisfying it must feel to have a truly silent night and wake up feeling refreshed and energised. I can't recall the last time I ever did.

What makes you think that just because you snore you have apnea? There's probably a lot of people who snore who don't have sleep apnea and plenty who do have it that don't snore.

The daytime tiredness is completely indicative of sleep apnea so chances are you've only just started suffering with it. On that basis I'd be amazed if some significant weight loss didn't sort it out.

I've had a lot of clients who've had sleep apnea and pretty much every single one of them has said that the c-pap machine completely cured them of any daytime tiredness and worked like a miracle.

i think its most about bodyweight
had this kind of a problem at 160 bodyweight, my girl told me I stop breathing for 10 seonds in my sleep
now 20 kilos lighter no problem
also had 3rd tonsil removal operation last summer which helped me a lot with my breathing and my sleep
never get tired now and have a lot of energy
bodyweight is the key I think
most of super heavy guys suffer from sleep apnea

Top response Cool

Yes I bet there's loads of people who suffer to a degree and will just never find out, it's perhaps not bad enough to notice yet still robbing people of precious daily energy.

I don't just snore, I stop breathing for normally up to half a minute then let out another loud gasp/snore for air, usuallly accompanied by a violent movement of the head to the other side. My ex noticed it months ago and I've since filmed myself a few times doing it, it tends to carry on most of the night also.

I know for a fact it would improve if I lost size/weight and did more intense cardio However in order to successfully do this and maintain reasonable strength levels it will take time and commitment. I aint afraid to commit but I don't want to continue suffering for months with low energy and poor sleep whilst i do it.

The cpap, at least in my mind would allow me regain some sort of control in the first instance and spare me the energy to make such goals possible. I'm not suggesting I choose it as a permanent way of life, but at least once I have it, it is there as an option should it be needed.

It is reassuring to hear your clients have good results Grin

Im sure Ive heard that its neck size not fatness thats the issue, so even at 15 stone you might well have an issue. Although my small 3 year snores so loudly I can hear him through the wall...

If you are very overweight the likelyhood is you will have a fat neck... I hope so anyway otherwise you would look very odd Grin

If your neck is 18" or above you are statistically more likely to suffer from apnea than not

All things considered cases where people have this condition and it is not caused by their weight are very very rare... I would hate to be that one in a million who has abs and suffers from sleep apnea

For most symptoms get a lot worse above a certain weight and if they lose just a little they themselves perceive a huge improvement

People generally however dont like the idea that if they lose weight it will help their health in many ways even though we all know this is true

So to me it usually boils down to fatness and general well being... If you need to lose that bodyfat you now have even more motivation

In the immediate term looking at your sleeping position is a huge benefit... You will need an additional pillow to support your chest on the inside as you lean... Keep your head tilted and chest cavity under as little pressure as possible

There are lots of things we can do... Sleeping position is the first one is advise... As it is immediately actionable

EDIT get a CPAP ASAP and get you life back gentlemen ...

Simon. I hope the Olympic weightlifting is going well!

Do you have sinus issues too? I have this and I have bad sinus. I get sleep apnoea worse when my sinus are bad.
I run a dehumidifier and it cleans the air.
Also wash curtins, no carpets and generally dust the room I sleep in (well fiancé does). No sleep apnoea for a few months. Damp mould on windows needs to be cleaned weekly too.
Also pull out wardrobes, bed and make sure no dust, damp or mould there. Anywhere you find mould or damp run dehumidifier then paint with oil paint. It stops it coming back for a about 8 months.
