I've been skimming through this vid, mainly taking an interest in the performances of Samuelsson very early in his strongman career. Obviously lacking statically, but he did have some good events, winning the Hercules Hold Happy

different times wayne.

in many ways simular to bb...Arnold, franco etc (the pumping iron era) are seen to many as the golden era of bb.

maybe, we have the same with strongman?

for me JPS will always be the main man. and Mangnus is after all the man i named my firstborn after Happy

This guy (roughly 105 kg) thinks he could've won WSM in '95.
Spoiler alert: he doesnt really.

the era of approx 98 to maybe 2003 was my favourite and I grew up with Capes on TV.

Being 120 to 150kg as "heavy" kept it athletic and great speed and rep battles. People anywhere close to 200kg were freaks and one trick ponies. Glen Ross deadlifting for example.

They were almost* believable to be attained naturally with whey and beef.

Same how Arnie's bodybuilding was almost convincingly the natural limit fantasy.

But at least they looked almost athletic.

Back when the power stairs was a regular. Miss that being so popular.

Stumbled across the Finnish TV version of WSM 1995. It has different scenes and angles to our version, which I found interesting. We get to see Varalahti pressing, caber throwing, tug of warring and squatting (not shown in our version).

I like that Magnus looks a lot bigger since leaving WSM. Quality. He’s in great shape now.

Also agree that arnie’s build when he was on stage is much preferred to the modern guys (sorry if anyone here falls into that category, just my opinion).

Miss power stairs too. The hands being shred on event 1. Honestly the events recently have been so yawn. I don’t want to see atlas stones ever again and it was my favourite as a kid. I know I moan about the events a lot but grrrrrr.

Squatting isn't doing my back any good.

I’ve recently been rewatching all the old WSMs including heats - starting at 94 anyway. A couple of things have struck me:

-Some of the early events/ equipment were soooo dangerous (eg. Horrible-looking anchor for distance carry/ medley)

-When Z popped up he was already so good, mixing it with the best in multiple events

-Pudz (and Dyymek even more so) so athletic. There’s one year where they’re all standing wait deep in a pool at the start of their intro scene and have to climb out. Dymek did a two footed jump out of nearly waist deep water

-Pudz was so light when he first appeared (about 123 I think) and was so much bigger (just over 140) by 2007. He looked huge at that weight with his frame.

-As mentioned above Magnus Samuelson also transformed himself. Lean 120ish to a huge 150Kg guy.

-Mark Westerby.... maybe one of the most naturally gifted in terms of size and strength genetics. Apparently hadn’t lifted a weight until age 38!! Also won squat in one of the qualifiers.

Farm boy stretch. He hadn’t been to the gym but pulled tractors and lugged farm equipment around day in day out. I bet his grip was insane.

the interesting thing for me with z is that when he first started on the world level the events he tended to pick most points in were the moving events. as he progressed he built insane static power on top of that base to become the athlete that he did.

I think that is how the best athletes develop - fast, fit athletes who have the potential for strength. you can be strong at first but if you are not fast or mobile it his tough to develop those skills.

It's easier to make good athletes strong than it is to make strong people athletic. Absolutely spot on

If you have gleaned that info from a TV show remember the commenters talk absolute bollox and like to glam stuff up.

Big Z had squatted over 400kg as a junior in the IPF before doing any strongman so not exactly weak.

I dont think anyone is saying he was weak. just that his balance of strength fell toward the moving events back then. in 2002 for example his squat total was crushed by girard and karlsen but he dominated them in all the moving events. he was strong but not unbeatable.

it was later on that all the static lifts became bankers for him.
