littlegirlbunny | ![]() | Shoulder injury - any experience/advice?? | 30-04-2008 @ 09:08 |
![]() MIA Member 7, 621 posts SQ 80, BP 45, DL 125250.0 kgs @ 55kgs UnEq | Just as I rekindle my love for lifting I go and take a fall off the bike straight onto my right shoulder. That was last Thursday and I still am struggling with the basics now. Initially I thought it may be just a strained front delt because it was swollen and I couldn't lift my arm out front at all. However, as the general brusing and muscle pain has subsided I am left with very limited range of motion laterally and 45 degrees from the body in both directions. I mean, really limited - I can only raise the arm about 10 cm before it stops. I have got a physio appointment with my NHS physio - but it's not til the 7th - so I am getting a bit desperate to get things healing faster. Anybody had any experience of a similar injury or have any idea what it may be?? Otherwise its going to be leg press, leg press, possibly leg extensions and more leg press for me ![]()

I would deffinatly go for lots of rest, try to keep it moving to disperse fluid and prehaps ice packs to help reduce swelling. If it is moving thats a good thing, don't force it where it doesn't want to go however, if somthing is amis you could damage it more.

To be honest though, if you've got such limited ROM a week later it doesn't sound good, could be a bad tear ![]()

Making a diagnosis over the internet is practically impossible especially with a joint as complex as the shoulder capsule. There could be a any number of reasons as to why your shoulder isn't abducting (moving away from your body) normally. I would really need to examine the shoulder before I could tell you anything. Get your shoulder examined by someone and get back to me about what they say. I can then give you advice as to what you should do. In the meantime, reduce swelling and inflammation with RICE (Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation) and anti-inflammatories; this will make assessing your shoulder easier when you go and see someone.

![]() MIA Member 7, 621 posts SQ 80, BP 45, DL 125250.0 kgs @ 55kgs UnEq | Ok, quick update (copied this over from my training journal) Briefly he said that he wasn't sure exactly what I had done because it had been so long since the accident. However, the pain and lack of mobility I still have (which is getting better day by day) it related to the inflammation in and surrounding the joint. So when I raise my arm the tissues are getting stuck in the joint, thus causing pain. I also have a lot of muscle tension and spasming surrounding the joint. In addition the tight muscles which I was originally having physio for are coming back because I am having difficulty doing the exercises he has given me because of the new shoulder injury. He said he couldn't be sure that there wasn't any ligament damage, but that either way it could take up to another 4 weeks to properly heal However, he did say that I should try and mobilise/stretch it as much as possible, without aggrevating the tissues that are inflammed. So it's a case of reading my body and knowing the limits and trying to get the balance of mobility v's aggrevation right. Could be a steep learning curve - but I am happy that I have had feedback and I know what the problem is so I can at least start to deal with it.
