what is the justification for the cost? testing?

Membership alone is about £40. Singlet £40+. Comp entry about £20
All kit needs to be IPF approved too.

To be fair, way cheaper than combat sports so anything costing less gets my missus approval.

I would only grab strengthshop basics for any competitions. Seem okay.

I think amateur powerlifting genuinely is for the love of it. I don't feel I'd be remotely competitive against others, so it would be a self challenge. How I fair in comp environment. A lot to be said for that. I have never been in any strength competition.

What about competition legal underwear? I'm not even joking, that's a thing in the IPF.

If you want to feel appreciated and enjoy yourself try the GPC or BPU, if you want to be put off lifting for life go IPF LOL.

A few years ago looked after a couple of novices from our gym at a YNEPF (IPF) meet in some gym in Morley (“fight science” or something) - one lad failed his squat after spending a good 10s waiting for a squat command with head judge insisting his legs and hips ‘absolutely straight’ - by time he actually got to do the movement he was spent, failed to come out the hole, confidence completely shattered and didn’t get a lift in IIRC.. this was an 83kg first timer with 130kg on his back ffs, zero chance of qualifying. Needless to say he never competed again

Yes, and they have to be a specific style. Boxer shorts are not allowed in the IPF as they are deemed too modern.

I hosted a "for lols" comp for people like the lad you mentioned, who wanted to get into lifting. Plenty first timers, pick your music, bring your friends, enjoy yourself kinda day.
Some people enjoyed themselves so much that they wanted to enter an affiliated competition within the IPF. They thought I was joking when I said bring a book and don't clap too loudly. She had the most boring day of her life and I was almost banned from the building for having too much fun.

The onus is on the lifter to know the rules, that said I have seen it a few times where head ref just waits for the lifter to "get set"
I hate it. I would personally give the lifter the command "re-rack" and have a quick word with them tell them what i expect before giving the command.

I would always advise a first timer to open with what he can lift under all the worst possible scenarios, so it seems the fella "started too high"

There is a home gym reddit powerlifting meet this month. 30k in prizes. You have to join instagram and tag the event with a video of your lifts. Boxers are allowed on the outside of your singlet, as long as you don't perform the lift in a commercial gym.

That's amazing.
Stuff like this will pop up more and more.
Wonder if simply being an IG lifter will actually make more sense long term

Whilst I would recommend British Powerlifting if you're wanting to be competitive the other feds seem much more fun. I've done one PL comp which was BP and one ref was a right t**t with me, apparently for daring to enter their prestigious federation as a dirty dirty strongman. She shouted at me in the warm up room for not pulling my socks up whilst warming up and then said they weren't long enough so I'll have to cut them to pull them high enough. Now them being SBD deadlift socks made me think she was being a c**t on purpose. Wanting me to ruin my stuff to appease her was also really f**king weird. Me and my uncut socks eventually got on the platform and lifted. Afterwards she said to a friend that she thought I was going to be a t**t and a diva but I actually had a really good attitude. Nice to be treated like a dickhead because it was assumed I'd be acting like one. After that I decided I couldn't be bothered doing the British and probably won't ever do a comp with them again Tongue

I also liked being tested to try and get the dirty strongman rather than testing their top lifters hahaha

So yeah maybe just do BPU or something with atmosphere

hahaha. Some other responses I had from a couple of guys who competed 3/4+ years back for them also seems to be some pretty crappy feedback. Not dissimilar to the pompous comments and personality disorder of older hierarchy.

I won't rule them out based purely on that though, as sadly amusing as it seems.

Having a raz through the (A)BPU website gives off a purposeful vibe and intro about encouraging competition elsewhere. That's a big deal.
Also, tested numbers seem surprisingly low? Or is that just realistic for tested and low competitor numbers?
