Member 1260, 92 posts | i have been diagnosed with piriformis syndrome, tried manning the f**k up and it didnt work. has anyone had this before? or got any tricks up their sleeves? i will try anything. | ||

Member 1260, 92 posts | im in the army and the docs have diagnosed it, but they are always slow to act on repair and i need fixing quick. piriformis syndrome, is when the piriformis muscle compresses against the pciatic nerve causing pain in up underneath the buttocks and down the leg. its stopping me from locking my hips out at the end of a squat, and picking anything up off the floor in front of me. its caused by heavy weight training and other froms of athletics which i also do. can be made worse by extended periods of no training. and seeing as i have spent over 3 of the last 4 months away with little training im guessing thats causing it. | ||

Member 1260, 92 posts | im just stretching the best i can at the minute and laying off what causes me pain. a couple of different physios have suggested dry needling so am going to look into that | ||

sumo ?? no ! no ! Member 1399, 557 posts | Stretch the hell out of the piriformis (google piriformis stretch), foam roll it and use a hockey ball for self myofascial release. Badger the doctors to refer you to a physiotherapist for some proper deep tissue work and that should take care of it. Surgery really is a last resort for piriformis syndrome because enough soft tissue work will relieve it sufficiently. | ||

Especially the hockey/cricket ball, even a tennis ball if desperate or to start off with. I think to be effective, it should hurt enough to almost make you cry. | ||

For some deep tissue work you can do your self use a tennis ball on the muscle and either roll it along the muscle of find a trigger point and leave the ball on it in a seated or standing position (against a wall or on the floor) don't do it to often as the area will get tender and will not do it any good. | ||

Yes. Sit on floor. Cross affected leg over other (which is bent to c. 45 degrees, or more if flexibility allows) and plonk affected glute on a lacrosse ball or similar. Roll around areas of pain. Ouch. BTW, this condition can be hard to shift, so concerted effort is advisable. | ||
