So called because I already keep a journal on MyProteins forum, so I'll simply be copying onto here. Heres a few recent training sessions to get started...

Tues-9/3/10

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

RE Lower

Squats
60kg x10, x8
100kg x6
125kg x4 x6

DB RDLs
32.5kg x3 x20

done.

Thurs-11/3/10

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

RE Upper

Bench
60kg x10, 8
80kg x8
90kg x6
97.5kg x4 x6

Axle press (overhead)
58kg x8
63kg x10 (7 strict, 3 push press)
63kg x10 (7 strict, 3 push press)
63kg x8 (5 strict, 3 push press)
63kg x10 push press

Seated cable row (full lean forward + leg use-hand over hand vehicle pull simulation)
15p x20, 10, 10

Fri-12/3/10

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

ME Lower

Chain squats
65kg x10, 8
100kg of chains added
65kg x3
105kg x2
125kg x1
135kg x1
145kg xf
137.5kg x1

Hard work, pretty happy with that.

Sun-14/3/10

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Events Training

Hand over hand tyre pull using a 100kg tyre+25kg sandbag. This was on a rubber matting surface so was very difficult to pull, but will hopefully be a good simuktaion of the initial pull for vehicle pulling as there is no build up of momentum. Blistered and tore skin off my fingertips, so didn't do the planned farmers walk afterwards. Just worked on Axle cleaning technique. Lots of reps at about 60kg, then up to 90kg. 90 was a bit hit and miss due to grip but 80 was nice and comfortable. Need to get to a stage where I can comfortably clean 100kg on the axle.
Done.

Mon-15/3/10

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

ME Upper/Overhead

Military press
60kg x8 strict
60kg x8 push press
80kg x5 push press
90kg x4, 5, 4 push press/jerk

Hammer seated shoulder press
20kg per side x10+5 palms facing
30kg per side x10
40kg per side x10

Low to high seated machine row
20kg per side x15
30kg per side x2 x15

Heavy (for me) overhead stuff is tiring. Need better conditioning. Also need to build up to 100kg for reps (as many as poss)

Tues-16/3/10

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

RE Lower

Squats
60kg x10, x5
100kg x5

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Conditioning

16kg kettlebell snatches
20 seconds work, 10 seconds rest x10 *

60kg powerclean and press
60 seconds- 10 reps
60 seconds- 10 reps
60 seconds- 9 reps

Lying leg raise/pike
3x15

Still not feeling great but thought I might as well train. Knackered now!

Thats the last few weeks of my training. Not been great lately due to illness, and as of today a (hopefully temporarily) knackered back.

Cheers JC.

It might not seem like the most relelvent training for strongman, but I train with powerlifters and I'd rather do it this way (to a certain extent) than fanny around half heartedly by myself. I try and get to Exertrain fortnightly to get a bit of event training in (as of last month) I have recently ditched some of the benching in favour of overhead work on a Monday to try and address a major weak point. Putting my journal on here will hopefully hellp me tweak my training towards strongman a little.

Although I took it easy for todays session the last set of strict pressing was hard. I struggle with strict pressing from the bottom of the press, which makes it a grind because the lack of speed means it tough to lock out too. Any advice on the best way to remedy this? Is it a case of just strict pressing for reps ie 5's maybe and slowly upping the weight? Or is there anything else you would recomomend instead/aswell?
Cheers

Axle work

Axle clean and press/jerk
53kg ish- a few
73kg ish- a few plus a couple of extra presses
93kg ish- a few (missed a few of the presses but got em on second attempt)
103kg ish- continental clean (belt on) x1 (failed the press)
103-f
93ish x1 c+p

a few goes at crucifix holds with 10kg/12.5kg/15kg dbells
lateral raise-12.5kg x10

hmmm, not far off with the 100. Hopefully I'll be able to powerclean it eventually as the continental clean takes too much time. The press will be there soon.

I'm far from an expert on overhead pressing but since doing push presses/jerks and concentrating on throwing the weight up rather than pressing it, I find my strict presses are a lot faster off the bottom when I do them.

I also find that stopping reps on the chest rather than above the head also help to emphasise the bottom part of the lift.

I already stop on the chest. It's getting that initial speed from there that's the problem I think. With push press/jerks that comes from the legs, so for me doesn't seem to help with my strict pressing.

Sit and relax legs/hips, but only for a split second. All my training is at Ironman apart from the bits of event training. I've not made it to Exertrain for a month, but it'd be better to train there if it wasn't just me. needs more atmos I think. I might be there next Sunday.
