Ok whos had one, how bad was it and how was your recovery. Did you get back to your original strength and how long did it take. Also how did it happen.

Tore one, right side, massive bruise on my bicep followed the day after. Strength levels took forever to get back to normal and I still have to bench close grip, not that my strength is anything above average.
How it happened - not my finest hour, but amusing in retrospect. At work (policeman) I had occasion to exit a police vehicle and give chase to someone - I neglected to acclimatize myself to my surroundings and ran in front of the car I had exited - still running on the road - that car was also travelling in the same direction - that car hit me as I ran athletically and with a lithe grace. I flew forward and hit the tarmac in a dive . Ripped clothes, tore a bit of skin from hands, arms. knees - tore clothing and pop went my pec !

tore my left pec 3 days ago....during working up 2 near max bench level.......was on 2nd rep of weight then felt a rip in my left chest as pushed the off chest......had a doctor and physio opinion on it and it looking like a partial tear and not a tendon rupture..........still have good range of motion and had no bruising just have swelling under armpit and chest........

hoping it is partial and can make a quick recovery if so......gutted tho!

warmed up for 20mins before lifted.....feel it happend as muscles felt tight and i just lost concentration with technique on 2nd rep of the lift

I did mine at a comp YNE, the plan was only to do 2 bench attempts but it was going so good so thought ill have another. I took the weight had the start command and started lowering the bar which felt quite comfy, i was thinking iv got this easy but 2 inches from my chest it went like a small explosion in my right peck. I now am left with a 1.5 inch hole near my arm pit, sholder crease.
Its been 9 months and still isnt 100%.
Iv since realised the reason it probably happened is I train with power bars and at the comp they had ivanko bars and the rings are wider than on the power bar and I set my hands the same causing my grip to be alot wider.
hopefully next comp mid feb will bring me back to where I was before the tear.

What causes the pec to tear?

May be a silly question but is it a loss of form? The weight itself? Tight pecs?

Or is it one of those injuries that just happens?

Strong contraction of the muscle (usually heavy loading or trauma), usually while lengthening/eccentrically contracting. Increased risk or tendon/musculotendinous junction tears with anabolic steroid use, unclear whether this is direct weakening of tendons or just more rapid increase in muscle strength without compensatory increase in tendon strength is unclear

Was that at Ashington I seen that if it was the 210kg after the 200kg bench. you still managed a deadlift for a total.

Torn my pec twice and only 19, not good signs for the future lol

Both times its been benching, I now have to bench with a much closer grip and I warm up a lot more, although lack of warming up could have been the problem initially

Both were left pec too, although I don't think either were particularly bad tears, just enough to make me build back up from 30kg

Partially tore mine back on Halloween night( benching accident not trick or treating) and it's far from right yet despite not really training since. I have a hole in my pec near the arm pit and you can see the tendon where it meets the upper arm because the muscle has 'migrated' towards my sternum.

I really hope it is just a pec tear, and not what the Doc's mate had (RIP).
