Feel sorry for the Uzbekistani woman who's just bombed on the snatch. That's no way to exit an Olympics

I'm guessing you two don't watch a lot of cycling. The four British lads worked their guts out to try to give Cav, the greatest road sprinter who ever drew breath (according to l'Equipe) a chance, but nobody else would take a turn to work - because they knew if it came to a group sprint only he could win. They almost did it anyway...

I do actually.. This article sums it up really

The problem was everybody knew the tactics, and it was over when Froome dropped off. The race would've been Cancellara's had he not crashed.

No I don't watch much other then the tour de France I know that no one was helping I also said straight away he should of gone in the second break away.

Controlling a 32 man break and then another strong break at the end is a near impossibility for a five (but four 'working') team. Sod that anyway, rewatch the last 10kms and see if you can spot the bit where Vino buys Uran off. Wink

Yes indeed. But GB had two chances of three to win this way:

1. They might have got Cav to the line single-handed; they weren't all that far off!
2. Another team might have fancied its sprinter (Goss, Greipel, Tyler F?) enough to share some work and bring the break back, hoping the GB train would be tired at the end
3. Nobody else will work at all, even destroying their own chances, through fear of Cav.

The third happened, but it wasn't a certainty! I think any other strategy would have been less likely to work - the fact that it didn't doesn't mean it was wrong. In the end, as Cav said, they'd been so damned good that everyone was terrified of them, and THAT was the problem.

I should add it was the Sunday stroll comment I was mostly taking issue with; those four lads worked their hearts out.

That's always been one of the quirkier facets of road racing in as far as many teams take satisfaction in ensuring that someone can't win, regardless of how it impacts on their own victory chances. I couldn't see option two being viable really though. Greipel 'won' the token sprint from the bunch, but he didn't fancy his chances in a flat out gallop against Cavendish. Greipel's legs had gone at the end of the Tour and GB knew that. Goss? Maybe, but an 85% Cavendish would beat him anyway. Also, USA had two men in the break so they weren't going to chase. USA thought Phinney could do something from the break, I'm certain of it.
