Rick, I definitely agree with Jim on the dieting front - you could use a competition as an excuse not to diet, but you don't have to. You've decided to lose the weight anyway - I see no reason not to be lifting heavy and competing while trying to lose weight. Maybe you'd do better if you were heavier - but this applies just as much to everyday training as to competing.

Well, you went a fair while before competing yourself, Jonny.

Jim - I'm not making excuses, I'm giving reasons. Big difference.

The salford/sugden meet we were talking about would be a great bit of fun - take a week off from my regular training to rest up and just lift for a craic. This, though, if I'm going to do I'm going to take seriously. And right now that's not what I want to be doing with my lifting - I'm still sorting my basic form and strength out. It's not that I'm waiting until I set the world on fire, because I don't expect to.

I love powerlifting, it's made my training far more fun and given me a whole new focus. But I'm not sold on competition.

I lift because I love it.

au contrairie (little house on the)

I decided on the powerlifting route around jan feb last year, befor that i had enjoyed the big lifts but as part as a calorie controlled bodybulding plan diet.

BOSH - comp in september 06, less that 24 hours after taking up powerlifting

(some timescales have been changed)

I think this is totally fair enough. It was only the dieting reason I thought was a little illogical.

Yes, the dieting doesn't make any sense because it's not like you're a bodybuilder going to 5%. Losing weight when you have a lot of excess isn't hard and certainly doesn't mean you can't get stronger simultaneously.

However, if your heart isn't in it, it isn't in it.

Tokar, I think it will be just you and I competing. Bulk up the 110s!! Grin

Are you planning to compete in the 100s or the 110s then? How much are you weighing at the moment?

I am feeling a little guilty now about the harshness of my tone, but I am a great believer in people starting competition as soon as possible. I wish that I had done this. I believe that it brings about the fastest improvements.

Having said this, we are always short of spotters and loaders for the NW comps. Do any of you guys who are not lifting want to put yourselves forward? This is one of the competition factors that we are hoping to improve.

aint that the truth.

In my first comp (edited to add: and the only one so far, lol) i totalled just 520 (190/120/210) - thats not out of reach of from you Rick. But yeah, if your heart is not in it, then fair play.

Well as its my first comp I'll just compete at whatever I weigh in at, I'm just concentrating on the experience and getting as close to 500 total as I can. I suspect it will be 110s because I am at least 101.4 at the minute.

Rick should definitely turn up and have a go, it's a great feeling just to get a total on the board at any event. I'm sure if you have been to any contests before you will know that there's always a supportive atomosphere from the other lifters.
It improve your lifting on several levels: It will give you a benchmark to exceed for your next comp, Confirm that you are performing the lifts correctly and boost your confidence for your next competition. Who knows you may even get a cheap plastic trophy for your mantlepiece!!!

Ach, Rick doesn't have to lift if he doesn't want to. But I for one would definitely feel more confident if there were people I knew to be reliable spotting and loading. So thumbs up to that suggestion.

I agree that the dieting reason is completely illogical - but I'm a t**t for excuses when I'm trying to diet!

Jim, say what you think, man - I'm not upset at all!

I should be ok to do some loading unless I've missed something in the diary (edit or unless you sweet-talking bas***ds talk me into lifting Wink). I'm not the best at side handoffs for bench yet - as those at Adlington yesterday will attest - but I'm willing.

Bryn - welcome to the board! I've seen you lift a few times. Good stuff. Hopefully by the time I do my first comp I'll be light enough to be beaten by somebody else, rather than you Happy.

I'm up for it. Will still have a s**t total but it sounds like fun.

120/105/170 would be nice.
