And so it begins. i have an uncanny ability to finish exactly in the middle of my weight class at powerlifting comps. irrespective of how many competitors are in it i always come smack, bang in the middle. my mission jim, which i have chose to accept is to do better than that.
spent last week in the Manchester area getting some really good coaching from Tom Martin and today I was at a comp at my old gym in Inverness. It went really well: new squat PB of 207.5kg, new bench PB of 155kg and a new best total of 592.5kg. Next sunday i have the GPC-GB Welsh open. i am hoping that will be the begining of the end of mid-table obscurity! i do however have an alarming bruise on my left hamstring. there's no real pain, just a little tightness. hopefully it passes.

lucky enough to be married to a doctor. she was on night shift last night but this morning said its just a haematoma, most likely caused by squatting but that its nothing to worry about and should go in time. something of a relief.

nothing to report other than no issues with the bruise. wont be doing any more training until after this comp on sunday. this isn't what i normally do but i had an intensive week last week, culminating in the comp on saturday so time to rest and recover.
just some mobility work between now and then.

weigh in complete. bang on 100.00kg! so a bit f**king close. i am now sure that my scales give a reading of about 0.3-0.5kg lower than properly calibrated ones. 3 comps in a row i've been heavier at the weigh in than i was when i weighed myself that morning. that's without eating or drinking anything.
this is my 1st ever 24hr weigh in so i am currently gorging myself!
openers are: squat 205, bench 145, deadlift 225.

Pretty good comp, all things considered.
Very happy with my squat. a week ago i hit a new PB of 207.5kg and when i saw the speed the bar came up at i knew i had more in me. so yesterday i opened with 205, which i got. then went for 215, no problem. stuck my neck on the line a little with my third squat, 232.5. nailed it. fear has been holding me back in squatting for too long. this was another fast lift. i think if i had really went for it i could have hit 250kg yesterday.
bench was crap. opened on 145, which i got but failed twice at 152.5. which is crap when i got 155 in the local comp last week.
deadlift was ok. opened on 225 which i got. 2nd attempt was 230, failed for hitching, got it on the third attempt though. so total was 607.5kg. my best to date and only one over 600kg. i came 2nd in my weight class which means i have qualified for the full 3 lift comp at the UK finals Grin
i shouldnt have done that comp last week. stupid so close to this one but there arent many local comps so i felt i kind of had to go. should just have done 1 of each lift though. felt pretty tired yesterday and the biceps tendinitis effected my bench.

boring post is boring! not done any training since comp, just some stretching. got some repboards off the sponsor on here and a mark bell slingshot coming. be interesting to see how they work out. also one of those dead wedge things for adding/taking away plates from the bar easier on deadlift. tom had one when i was down training with him and it is very handy. been eating cleaner and keeping an eye on my weight, i really dont want to cut it that fine again.

session 1. Squat:
training partner never showed up, getting ready to sack him off to be honest. he's more hassle than help.
anyway: lots of mobility work to start off with, something tom martin showed me when i was down for my weeks training not so long ago. its def helping already. i did basically no stretching before now.
then squat: bar x5 paused reps, bouncing at the bottom to get as low as possible.
60x5, getting as low as possible again.
100x3,
suit on, straps down now:
130x3, 150x1.
straps up wraps on:
160x2, 172.5x2, 185x3.
all felt nice and easy, as ever in the suit its getting down thats the hardest part. tempted to go for more weight but this is a pre comp cycle, based on my new 1 rep maxes, so i'd best stick to it.
more to follow tonight.

second session today.
Bench. more mobility work with the roller under my back to try and get a greater arch first, along with some pec/shoulder/triceps stretching.
Bar x5, 70x5, 90x3.
Shirt on 105x4, 112.5x3, 122.5x2.
then tried same weight again with slingshot, felt f**king odd!

session 1:
deadlift.
small amount of stretching hamstrings.
60x5, 100x3,
suit on, straps down:
150x1, straps up:
172.5x4, 190x3, 205x2.
of all the equipment, the deadlift suit is the only thing i dont like wearing, it just throws my form off too much. its an inzer max DL single ply suit but i find it very tight in the straps which actually makes it hard to lock out. contemplating trying my squat suit backwards next time but maybe its too close to comp day now? unsure.
that dead wedge is very handy fpor loading the plates though.

session 2: bench assist work.

OHP 50x5x5.
Face Pulls with green band tied to top of cage 3x12.
Triceps Push Down with green band 3x12.
Bent Over Row 80kg 3x10.

not much rest between sets for no other reason than i couldn't be arsed spending ages in the garage again and the wife was home. she's nicer to look at than pre-cast walls.

Belated congratulations on an awesome competition performance!
what are the goals for the British? How long have you been training for now? Ever thought of getting some 1 to 1 training in with Andy Bolton?
