I only mentioned post 2000 as I have seen loads of early ones , but a good horror is a good horror !!

I have oculus and the harry potter one ready to watch and UFC prevented me from recording the conjuring , but its probably 'on demand'

Depending on what you look for in a Horror flick I thought Hard Candy was pretty good, as well Let Me In / Left The Right One In - well acted, well crafted and thought provoking. Dead Man's Shoes is also a very effective.

It's pretty easy to roll your eyes at the fairly recent trend for Torture Porn as it loses any bite it had when you know that a lot of that stuff is easily available out there for real - it always was out there, of course, but you had to really want to find it.

99% are s**t, I used to watch alot of horror films but realised the other day that I hadnt really watched any since I saw the Devil Inside at the cinema with the worst ending of any film ever made. The hills have eyes remake is a good one and I really liked Strangers aswell. Also Quarantine (american version of Rec) is worth a watch

Some very good ones mentioned already, which I shall shamelessly mention again.

Hard Candy: brilliant non-supernatural horror.
Drag Me To Hell: old-school fun
Cabin in the Woods: post-modern loving take on old-school fun
The Descent: the first two thirds of this are perfect claustrophobic genius. The last third didn't ruin it.
28 days later: 2002, so it counts Wink.
It Follows: this year's outstanding horror.

If you can tolerate subtitles:
The Devil's Backbone: old-school Spanish horror
Let the Right One In: best vampire movie ever?
Rec: brilliant, perfect, minimal zombie flick.
Dark Water: back in 2003 before I got sick of recycled J-horror, I called this a film anybody interested in horror should see. The later movies in the trend soured it for me, but it was a piece of genius.
Pan's Labyrinth: maybe the best, most beautiful, most disturbing film ever made, imo.

I bet I've missed some really obvious ones. I agree with most that horror's really dropped off in the last five to ten years, sadly.

I like your list Rick. And you are correct to add the "If you like Sub-Titles" bit - it seems that most good stuff these days almost requires it...

As to the recent dearth of good stuff I can only agree - but I wonder whether that is because less good stuff is being made or whether it just doesn't resonate with me in the same way any more. If you look at some of the recent box-office successes Horror as a genre can still find it's markets and I am guessing that the people enjoying them are enjoying them in the same way I did when I was younger.

I liked your list too - dead man's shoes is a great film and I think I nicked all your other suggestions!

Nearly 30% of the general cinema audience is 15-24, and I believe it skews significantly more heavily - like, well over half - that way for horror. So the studios know that they needn't worry about comparisons with older films, or tired tropes, or shallow putting, or reliance on gore and spring-loaded cats. The main audience want a jump, a giggle, and an excuse to grab hold of one another. Good luck to 'em.

I should also have mentioned 30 Days Of Night, which I loved to bits, although it's arguably a tragedy rather than a horror.

Rick. You and I would get on well.

Here... "Martyrs". It is entirely in French and the most disturbing horror I have seen in a long time. I'm not jump-easy, or a flincher but this film was cold and sore to watch.
