Ok so i've made my first concrete block. I used a 39 Litre Contico TuffTub. It's plastic. Filled and mixed the concrete in their and then let it set. Mixed by hand -with a thin metal bar) so it didnt all mix but I had a pretty much bucket shaped solid ass concrete block.

The tub was this: http://www.toolbank.com/p/CTO1120BK (I assumed it would have just slid out once overturned since the tub itself is pretty straight)

So I had to try and get the solid concrete block out of the bucket. Easier said then done. I rolled it over so the bottom was facing up, Stuck. bo***cks. It really wasnt budging and it is quite a hefty weight too. So In the end I had to crack the bucket and snap it off halfway round so that it would come out. Waste of a bucket. Good job it didnt cost a bomb. I want to make a few of these and don't want to be wasting a 3 quid bucket everytime.

Question is (Could have just asked it rather than giving you a story)....

Is there anything I could do to stop it from getting stuck in the bucket?

an another question...

Would filling a cardboard box with concrete and letting it set work? or would it just destroy the box and get the mixture everywhere?

That is all.

Perhaps you could part bury the box to support the sides and line it with a big bin bag

Make a form out of plywood and screw it together. Fill and let mix set. Unscrew.

Thanks for the reply guys. Was thinking of wedging it with something so plywood sounds like a very good idea.

FYI - Mixing 85kg of concrete by hand with a hollow metal bar is a son of a b**ch!

the Doc speak sense. make a frame to the size you want make sure its square and put a smooth sheet on the bottom and then pore and leave to set.

What you using the block for?

Reason I ask is that concrete is not strong enough to drop from height. You might want to considered steel reinforcing bars in the centre and/or using fibrous cement.

Speak to JT about what compounds he uses.

if you use the plastic tub method again you should probably coat it with oil/grease first. That's waht they do with the inside of stone moulds. Don't know of it's a special grease, maybe a silicone grease spray?

you could use fibers in the concrete mix as these act like steer rebar.

For training purposes. I've dropped it quite a few times now and it is really solid. I know it might not last long though. I only wanted to make some cheap concrete blocks for carrying and pressing etc.

If I start putting Epoxy and Hardner etc in the mix it will cost a fortune. For my next block, I might put some scrap metal in it. Corregated iron etc.

And yeah might have to send JT a PM too. See if he has any cheap suggestions.

I will use grease for my next concrete block in a tub. Sell plenty of that on the cheap at work.

Edit: Imagine this spray should do the job...

You could try lining the bucket with some damp proof membrane, but i would imagine you'd need heavy duty stuff.
