US U105kg World Championships

Training had been going very well for this leading up to the comp so was feeling very optimistic about acheiving my goal of reaching the top 6 and making the final day on Sunday. Arrived in Finland on the Friday and tried to get as early night as possible after weighing in at 100kg. For some reason I could not sleep at all and had an hour max which was not the best start at all.

On the Friday night the organiser released the events for the Saturday and decided to include a 230kg duck walk into a powerstair in the loading medley. So not knowing anything about this did not train for it which i felt was unfair as there was never any mention of a duck walk or a power stair but it was what it was. the other events were a 120 log for reps, 145kg farmers 30m and a 153kg sandbag carry for max distance. Where does one find a 153kg sandbag to train on?? lol.

Event one - 120kg log for reps FTOH (60 secs)

Log had been going well in training so was hoping for 5 reps as I know that 5 reps won this event last year. in the warm up i started getting light headed and cramped up a fair bit so was obvious i was coming down with something. Anyway I manged to hit 4 reps just missing the 5th on balance which cost me some good points.

Event two - 145kg farmers 30m (drop & turn 15m)

A good event for me so went for it, finished the course in 30 secs and almost dropped it near the end of the second leg which I never do so knew my immune system was down as my grip starts to go when this happens.

Event three - 90, 110kg sandbag load into 230kg duckwalk 10m into powerstair

They mase this event up for the day, no talk of duck walk on the event page on facebook or anywhere. Really would of trained for this but wasn't to be. Managed to load the sacks in a very quick time and moved with the duck quickly but could not load it on to the platform for the life of me. i had loaded it in the warm up just prior to the start of the event, head well gone now. This cost me a lot of points and knew I had no chabce in qualifying, just wanted to pack the whole comp in at this point.

Event four - 153kg sandbag carry max distance

Lots of boys struggled to get this off the floo let alone move with it. Well done to Mark Tophman and Will Baggott as tey managed to get a length of the course with it which only a few managed to do so. IMO a poor event as who has access to a 153kg sandbag? lol. i managed to pick it up after about three attempts cramping everywhere and got it a couple of meters.

Overall placed 9th which I am very dissapointed about as I know I have the ability to do a lot better, especially as my deadlift and axle had been going so well in training and didnt get a chance to do them. Have had a chest infection ever since so just wansn't meant to be.

Gonna take some time out from strongman now and see where top go from here.

Nice write up lewis....u have wrked hard and sometimes things don't quite go your way but u still achieved alot and 9th in world is nothing to be disapointed with.....

Take some time out as u have said and see how next few months go

Thanks guys I trained hard for that comp but just wasn't meant to be. In terms of organisation it would of been better if they announced the events before we got there and made them accessible for everyone to train for and not put in an event that wasnt originally on the line up like the duck walk into powerstair. I wouldnt go again put it that way, Europes was by far the better comp, gonna go back to Powerlifting now I think.

Be good to compete at 100kg in powerlifting as Ive always struggled to get near 105kg in strongman. No matter how hard I try the heaviest ive been is 100kg so makes more sense for me. Especially when guys diet down from 115kg to 105 just in my opinion is not right. Its U105 not over 105 lol.

Totally agree with u....

Euros was well run and organised and heavy.....

Power lifting be good for you bro...if u still struggle with weight what about the 94kg category,I'm sure there is one??
