I don't like being asked to spot, and I've never mastered the art.

I also don't like being spotted! I like to have space around me when I'm lifting, and having someone in close proximity puts me off! I only ask for a spot if it's really necessary (heavy bench). I'd much rather dump a squat on the pins.

99% of the time I can fail with control.

Are you a good spotter?

A spotter should be there for one thing, and one thing only...safety

There should be no assistance from a squatter unless you're buried under a bar IMO

Or trying to build muscles.

I think strongmen/powerlifter understand spotting quite well. They realise that it is about safety and you can easily explain your spotting requirements to them.

hate people who spot u and insist on taking some weight all the way through the set, even when u tell them not 2 touch u unless u fail!

Instructions to my spotters when I squat "just watch me lower this bar down onto the pins" lol
I hate being spotted tbh but it's essential for safety, like you say not for taking 10-20% of the load off you

I don't mind spotting as I like to think I know what I'm doing, if I HAVE to ask someone I will instruct them to the fullest first i.e. "unless I fail the lift, please don't touch the bar"

spotting can be very dangerous if your not using your own crew

but if you have your own crew its the safest way of training we spot each other all the time gets you used to the commands and routine gotta have a spotter on bench even with 60kg to get in position

Had some awkward situations. Asked a chap to spot a squat, wasn't happy to do it on his own so got a mate over and they took each side. As I came out of the hole I realised the guy on my right was 'helping'.

Otherwise it's the usual 'give us a spot mate, I'm going for 8'. The first rep just about makes it on its own. Old gym introduced a not particularly strictly judged PR board. Still deflated some egos.

Gave up benching after my brother got into cycling and stopped coming to the gym. Going for a 1rm was was difficult, if the bar even started to stall too many people start 'tipping' it.

Most people at my gym gain 50%+ on their lifts from their mates 'spotting' them. I never see them lifting unspotted. I personally always lift unspotted and hate it when I see some do-gooder heading my way in the corner of my eye whilst benching. Just f**k off and leave me alone!

I haven't used a spotter in months. They are completely unnecessary when you've got or are using a power rack.

think people have abit got the wrong idea of why you have spotters

end of the day when your sqauting say 180 for 6+ reps and your calf glute or qaud tears is it not wise to have a person on either end of the bar or when your doing reverse band sqauts with say 60 kilos more than your 1 rep max is it not wise to have people make sure you make it back into the rack

also how do you lift near max on bench without anyone helping you off the j hooks and bringing it forward over your face and to the safty of your chest because i cant

Yeah, I hate it when you don't even ask for it. You're pressing a weight over your head and then suddenly you've got somebody touching your elbows Angry

I dont mind general gym folk spotting me for squat if there is nobody else it. However, asking them to spot for bench/lift off is the worst thing. When I bench I barely lift the bar over the pins. However, a large majority of the general gym goers just rip the bar up and pull me out my arch. However, training with any of the usual Plers/Knowledgeable lifters know how to do it right. But yeah if someone gives you a bad lift off it can totally ruin your set.

Spotters are essential for safetly as said above. They are not there, as many believe, to help you do more than you can.

There have been occasions where (at my health club) I've have to stop mid way through a bench rep and tell my 'spotter' to get his f'ing hands off the bar Happy
