I'm probably going to do my first competition this year.

I just had a look at the GBPF/IPF regulations and discovered that my 'Therma Pro' tablets that I occasionally take for a major gym attempt might well be illegal for competition. They have some Ma Huang in them, and the active ingredient of that is ephedrine. The allowed concentration of ephedrine in urine is 10mcg/ml, and I've got no idea how this relates to using the tablets - so they are out.

I often feel I get a good kick from a strong cup of coffee - I feel more focused and maybe a wee bit stronger. Are there any good legal 'pre competition' supplements/drinks that offer the same? Or don't people bother?

I am buzzing and full of energy for about 3-4 hrs. Never train without it

GBPF on 22nd August (Unequipped) - if I ever get around to applying and provided I haven't misunderstood that I am eligible to compete.

Thanks for the replies guys, keep 'em coming.

no obvious reason you'd be ineligible, I expect there will be lots of people from this site doing the all England ,so you will get plenty of help!

I haven't bothered with pre workout stimulants for several years, although I used to hammer the epherdrine once upon a time. I just weened myself off it in the end.

The main thing to get right for a competition is lots and lots of slow burning carbs, eaten in the preceding 48 hours - and not to rely on chocolate, caffeine or jaffa cakes ten minutes before you are lifting.

Think hard about your mental preparation - and start doing so well in advance of the competition. See yourself successfully lifting your target weights driving through the sticking points with controlled aggression, obeying the refs comands and coping with the nerves - all of this is piss easy once you've mentally rehearsed it often enough. Then begin to replicate mental rehearsal into your training sessions until competition day - where you find yourself focussed and completely switched onto the task.

When you get around to liftiing day, you will be relaxed, confident and assured with no need for stimulants of any kind.

Eph is legal for out of comp use, its banned for in comp use. I would say (I am no expert) that a ceasing it a few days prior to a comp would reduce blood levels to well under the in-comp limit as its got a short half life.

So fine to take it for training, but in comp its not.

As for good stimulants, caffeine is your best bet, I like the redbull style drinks.

L-Tyrosine (although not a stimulant) which is an amino acid that can help to blow any brain fog away and give a little more focus.

Apart from that I recommend Nose Tork, nice big adrenalin spike.

Kaffeine Kick is pretty awesome. If I'd had some on Sunday I might have got the 162!

Thanks for the replies. Paul: yes, I am steering clear of ephedrine completely. I didn't even realise it was in these 'ere Thermo Pro until I checked what Ma Huang is. I only take them around twice a year anyway.

Special thanks to Mr. Pie for his wise words and beautifully crafted paragraphs Happy.
