Bit of a rant here, starting to get pi**ed off with the Mrs. At first she was supportive of my strongman training and my first comp she was great at supporting me.

A few months down the line and she is giving me grief saying its not a safe sport, I am getting injured and basically being really negative about it.
I have tennis elbow in both my arms which is mild as per my osteopath. I have an ongoing shoulder niggle which comes and goes but I manage through icing it and stretching it off.
None of the injuries are game changers or major issues but she cant handle it.

Does anyone else have this issue with you ladies and how do you manage it?

Cheers John

Neither of my partners were very positive about it, but it was more grief about spending time out training than issues about safety or injury. Those come from my family, well, mother specifically, who suggested I take up a safe sport like cycling Roll-Eyes

Have you talked to her about it?

I have had less injuries doing this than any other sport

We have spoken several times and she wont budge on her point of view, she is naturally a glass empty kind of person so I struggle to get any positive comments. I have told her that unless she can bring anything positive then not to bother talking to me about it. It is sad it has come to that but I need to be positive in my head, yes I have injuries but they are minor.

Cheers john

She would actually like me to be with her 24/7, this has caused issues before maybe its time to discuss it again.

The thing is I come home from the gym sometimes with a bit of pain so I ice my shoulder or whatever to recover etc and she sees this as a major problem.

Thanks for your input.

My wife cant stand strongman , never liked big blokes and cant see the point in it all but she supports me 100 percent in that ( as with Neil ) she knows I love it and how much it means to me so apart from the odd dig about how much time I spend in the gym and doing events shes pretty cool about it all.

When im going to the gym its "off down the gayclub again" and events is "off down fatman club" Grin Stops me from getting too much of an ego at any rate Happy

Personally, I think you need to try and find a way of getting her on board with it or you could reap a whole load of s**t if you did suffer a more major injury. How would you cope if you tore a bicep tendon and were in a cast for weeks and had limited mobility for several months? Could you work or would you need a lot of time off and have a whole boatload of grief?

She may well just be worried about paying the bills if something happens and seeing you with minor injuries is like the cheques already in the post in her head.

My girlfriend is too supportive! She wasn't happy when I devided to lose some flab and back off the strongman a bit

I've even come in and she's watching strongman on her own. Particularly likes Shaw's legs.....

At least it shows she's concerned for your safety. Give her some bullsh1t about you use elbow sleeves and it's fine now. Don't show her when you're in pain.

Its a tricky one. When i had my accident - dropping atlas stone on foot from height resulting in near amputation and losing a ton of work (self employed) my wife and I discussed it and agreed it wasn;t worth the risk. A few years down the line tho she could see i wanted to do it again badly and she actually pushed me to go back into it. Ultimately you can't change who you are, if its something you've always enjoyed its a part of you and as such a caring partner should IMO understand that. Lifes full of risk, everytime you get out of bed you risk injury of some kind, you just need to be sensible about things to limit that risk.

Yeah the mrs isn't really in to strongman as she thinks that we end up fat!

Regarding if I had a big injury I may still be able to get back to work relatively quickly as I am a desk jockey, I would get full pay while I am off too so financially there is no issue. Its actually cheaper to be off because I get paid travel even if I am not travelling lol

I think we need to discuss it tonight as I need the support, I just need to find out what her issue with it is and try and get her on board.

I am glad she is concerned about me but we need to move on from that because I am fine. I tell her all the time I know what the risks are and what I do to reduce the risks.

We will see, but keep the advice, comments coming please. They are helping :-)

Mine is very supportive most of the time but she has her moments as often our life gets put on hold and that irritates her. Tbh I think she knows I'm passionate about it so backs me to make the right decision. If ever she moans at me about going gym (which is virtually never) I just remind her that many women's husbands are down the pub watching football on tv every night and coming home drunk all the time, she seems to understand then
