In the last two days i've started having a shooting pain at the top of my knee going down the front of my patella, it only happens when i'm stepping up (stairs or ladder) and at the lowering stage of deads and powerclean.
Has anyone else had/got this and how did you train around it and help it get better?

I try to ignore any injuries with masses of anti-inflams/pain killers

Once you have lost use of said body part, a visit to the doc is probably required (although they will be of little help) Grin

Sounds like patella tendinitis/tendinosis, see your GP and be very forceful in demanding a referral to sports physiotherapy or orthopaedics.

My particular case was caused by excessively tight hip flexors, which was shifting the stress onto my knees. Resting them for a few weeks then doing rehab stuff emphasising the eccentric plus a lot of soft tissue work to improve my hip flexibility was the route to a cure.

yeah i had that just last week. Its gone now.

tendonitis was what Mike said it would be too.

I got a shooting stabbing pain in one angle only, perhaps just few degrees from straight.

plenty of ibu, regular icing, rest, elevation and avoiding stuff that hurt it seemed to do the trick. I stopped squatting now for a week, but deadlifts were fine. Power jerks were hurting but split jerks were fine (pain is on left knee which is the back leg)

Also i warmed up a bit more than normal, and used muscle heats.

I'd train around it and do nothing that aggravates it. If lowering dead lifts and power cleans are aggravating it, set up something so you can drop them! Mats? Grass? Find an alternative technique for ascending stairs too. Backwards? Keep the bad leg straight?

Thanks gents, I've been using ice and I'll try some heating of area before next session, and also avoid anything that aggravates it.

What about any rehab exercises to help it and prevent it happening again?

as said by others this sounds like patella tendonitis, i have had it n it creeps back every now n then. i had physio sessions and he suggested one legged squats which worked well for me.

a lot of ibuprofen and tiger balm before workouts n a lot of ice after
