Jonathan Edwards at the peak of his career used to squat 500lbs.

Plenty of great athletes could do any sport they turned their hand to.

They maybe wouldn't be the best at other sports but they would do well.

Remember seeing an interview with Lennox Lewis saying he could of been a professional basketball player but he loved individual sports and wanted to be a world champion, so he boxed instead!

We must punch holes in the darkness with light.
The lamp without wind will not waver. He used your name as an analogy. You do not get wood from a tree because the tree is wood. The rain is water my friend.

actually Ben Johnson squated 405 lbs for reps back in the day

He could bench that.

He squatted 600lbs (I think) for reps to a bench.

Happy

Its pretty clear to see that if you are a world class athlete that needs to demonstrate speed, power and strength you may be at the very least decent at another sport that requires varying combinations of the above.

I don't understand why you would think that. Would an explanation be too much trouble ?

Just because some athletes are exceptionally strong, doesn't mean that in sports where strength is not a limiting factor, that they would all be very strong. I suspect for example that there are many 100m runners who are significantly stronger than Bolt and that he might not make a good powerlifter.

I've trained around enough athletes to know now that most are quite weak compared to powerlifters.

I've been a few places for a holiday/training, and got to see many athetes from around Europe training. I was surprised to see the Russians are just like everyone else, with guys around my weight range cleaning 90 and quarter squatting 200x being the norm. The odd guy doing 120 and struggling to walk out 250 will be the gym hero for the day.

There are rare exceptions of guys who can lift well in certain lifts only (140-150 hang power clean, but can't full squat it). Hardly anyone has all around strength like Ben Johnson or Harry AA, although Ben had a relatively weak deadlift.

Edwards 500lb squats are most likely the shallowest of movements. There's a triple jumper who might beat the WR soon who has a 310kgx3 squat video on youtube who shows a typical athete squat, Teddy Tamgho. Also a world class female long jumper has a 210kg 'squat' video somewhere out there. It's on a smith machine and very shallow movement. This cyclist goes deeper than any athlete i've seen. I never see big strong throwers though in these training camps, where they hide?

Also, i just power cleaned 175@81 Happy

There were, and are, some extremely strong throwers around. I do sort of regard them as being in a strength sport though, even though there were gym weaker guys (still often very strong) who were technicians in the throws and could compete as a result.

I think all anyone is saying is that there is a percentage of athletes in most sports who together comprise an elite group of athletes in a physical sense, even if that doesn't absolutely translate to performances in their given sport. A good proportion of them will be the kind of freak that, had they chosen powerlifting, would have been extraordinarily good at it.

I've always understood the 'slow lifts' to be a small part of of a track athletes training volume and as a result they would not have a great power lifting total.

A thrower or a wrestler should be strong in the three power lifts logically
