Overtraining does exist but the limits we can get to before overtraining are rarely even approached.
Especially with 7+ hours sleep and good eats, it is actually very hard to overtrain under those circumstances.
If you stop eating properly, sleeping less, training very hard then something will complain after a while.

Like ken says it was due to not resting enough and not consuming enough nutrients to repair the damaged tissue !!

So it had nothing to do with you training too much, more not eating properly and resting enough Grin

(you can not train, AND not rest, one doesn't automatically mean you are not doing the other one e.g. if you take a day off training but stay up and play CoD all night that doesn't count as rest!)

As a result of this, other tissues and functions in the body which need constant repair don't receive the amount of attention they need, thus resulting in a gradual breakdown of their ability to do their job, getting weaker as time goes on.
My guess would be that the weaker tissues damage much more easily hence bruising easier.

Yeah i heard something similar on a russian strength training book and on a documentary about the chinese lifters.

Well that's it, im not training again till next monday lol.

Not so long ago I trained DL every day to my 3RM, I did this for about 3 1/2 weeks.
After 2 weeks [or so] it seemed like my back started to get used to it, but my grip was pure agony.
I lost most of the calluses on my hands and simple things like opening doors hurt like hell.

After a week off [roughly] my grip seemed stronger and I'd put 10kg on my dead.

My grip was definately over-trained in this time.....

Yes, overtraining definitely exists as a phenomenon but don't forget adaptation too. If you treat it well outside the gym, your body will fairly quickly adapt to increasing stressors.

Athletes who train twice daily 5-6 x per week are overtrained but highly adapted too. If they are coached well and have good genetics then they will excell.

What would the repercussions of being overtrained in that instance be, if any?
And overtraining is maybe what they need by normal standards to excell.

I've only been overtrained (at least that's what I think it was) once and it took around two months to recover. I didn't see it coming at all, it just hit me one day a few days after a competition.

Now I pay much more attention to recovery, particularly sleep, diet and supplementation. I don't intend to be overtrained ever again, it's a pain in the butt!

I personally don't believe in 'overtraining'.

If i get to the point where i have loads of little niggles, aches and pains i usually just change things up a bit to prevent full blown injuries. So, if your pec delt insertion is hurting while warming up for heavy bench, it may be a good idea to sack it off and do something else.

I experience most of the symptoms of 'overtraining' that you described on a weekly basis - yet i am still making steady gains.

If you wanted to be a good football player as a young kid, you'd practice by kicking a ball around the park with your mates a few hours each day. You still played when sore, tired from school or whatever. Same with the squat, if you wanna squat big you have to spend time under the bar!

Injuries are a different issue altogether, as Tom mentioned! I have been silly myself in the past and pushed through them and made them worse.

5 year bump!

I thought i could train like world class athletes this year. Starting from October I took an easy part time job and tried to make my life as easy as possible to concentrate on training. It was going very good for the first 3 months

Time skip

I'm in the worst shape i've been in since starting training. I'm losing weight every week even though i'm eating and lifting heavy. My muscles still shrink and i'm getting fatter for the first time ever. Even though i've lost weight, the muscle that i do have just isn't firing anymore so lb for lb i'm weak. I've taken it easy for 1-2 weeks here and there with no improvements. Over training is very real, i just hope i haven't caused myself some real problems (thyroid?).

Have you been to the doctor? That would seem like the first thing to do
