For those of you who don't follow programmes I was wondering how many working sets you do on deadlift, squat, bench, and push press/military??

I currently only do 3-4 on each and I'm starting to think I might need to up it to progress past my plateaus

Anywhere from 5 to 8 is my usual working range.

I was expecting more than that, what kind of rep range are you all doing then?

For bench usually upto a top set on a few variations. Total 'working sets' usually 8-20 lol.

Squat and deadlift were usually ~3-5 working sets usually upto a top set.

Normally between 1-4. Nearly always 1 for squats unless I'm having a back off day.

Probably better to ask how many sets across the week, imo.

Less volume across multiple/every day or a lot more volume on one day a week, two different strategies on either end of the spectrum.

How strong you are also effects this. Tom only does 1 working set, but the warm ups he does are most than what a lot of guys max with so his volume racks up regardless.

Good points, see I only train each exercise one day a week

Mine varies depending on what I'm training, what phase my training is at and also what is called for in any upcoming competitions and varies from 1-10.

If youre not following a program you should at least follow some simple guidelines. That can for an example be 25-40 reps between 60-80% each time you lift. I do suspect though that if you are only doing the lifts once a week now you can get some massive increases by going to two or three times a week.

Also, from my experience most people who just train intuitively tend to do too low volume and too high intensity for most of the time. Too little and too heavy.

this question also depends how many times per week a lift is trained, and whether assistance is close in effort and mechanics to main lift.

I try to do about 10-20 sets I class as 'working' over the week on squat and deadlift, with squat 2x week and deadlift 1x
with a similar number on bench movements. again bench 2x week. training is reasonably intuitive, with vague plans to ramp up tonnage or intensity depending on competition phase.
