I for one, was a lazy s**t, and really feel disappointed in my attitude back then. If I could start again and go back to being 6 years old or whatever, but keep the little life experience and knowledge I have now, I would make it my mission to learn absolutely anything and everything anybody was willing to teach me.

I'm sure there were some here who had this attitude growing up, but for the most part it appears education is wasted on people who are at a stage in their lives when they have absolutely no interest in being educated.

Thoughts?

I often Ponder this myself. you are 100% correct. however i don't believe people should ever stop acquiring knowledge. keep reading, keep studying. obviously life gets in the way as we get older. i'd like my time over at school with my head screwed on right. too busy playing Rugby League with dreams of stardom instead of paying more attention.

To think like that our years in education were wasted is not an unusual feeling. Though fairly bright, I was generally pretty lazy at school, particularly secondary school when i was always looking out the window and dreaming of playing sport at a high level. I managed to scrape through 5 'o' levels, then failed my A levels cos I was always down the pub playing pool. Got my s**t together re-took my A Levels scraped enough to get to University where I was again far too lazy and scraped an average degree. Only got my s**t together in my mid 30s and 40s returned to University got a masters degree and a doctorate. Still don't see myself as having made the most of education as I can't get a Job in the subject I worked 8 years (p/t) for a PhD in. Main conclusion drawn is that academic success is not equivalent to real success. If i could live it all again I probably would not worry about trying to prove I was not thick.

I think about this too.

Not about School/sixth form though, it would be impossible to actually do better.

But at university ive been lazier than I should have. I'm on track to pass but there's always more to learn, ESP in my field.

I feel I wasted my opportunities. I don't actually think it has that much to do with salary, my friends which didn't go to uni earn more than those that did via sales jobs and in house training. Obviously certain degrees will give better salaries.

I'd do uni if I could go back though purely because it allows you to work in a field your interested in/ sounds fun rather than boring office jobs working your way up. Money doesn't mean much to me.

I could still do uni being 21 but I like the idea of running a little business now. Online retail maybe.

Most of my school years I was distracted by black metal and being a Dick. I'm at college now trying to be less of a reprobate

Do both!

With most degrees you'll have f**k loads of free time!

Half 1 in the morning, Tom you are deep.

I never cared in school, don't think i ever did homework, didn't do coursework, always had detentions that i never turned up to. Soon as i went to college, something i wanted to do, i made an effort - then there was no jobs!

Now i'm going back (out of own money) to do something else, and try to work and train my ass off. Luckily people think im 18 because im so immature anyway.... wouldn't wanna look like a pedo. I might keep studying for as long as i can. We are the same age, it's never to late.

I was absolutely s**t at school, learnt next to f**k all and was usually "the one to spoil it for all the rest". I just lie about my school qualifications on application forms, they never check.

This is an interesting area for me, my Masters dissertation touched on this and I'm in and out of this area for my doctorate.

I think we could certainly say some students aren't ready for education at the age of compulsary schooling.

For a number of possible factors some students just won't be receptive to teaching and/or see the point to it. This goes deeper than just the student. Their individual background, family life, parental influence etc all come into play strongly as marked factors which *usually* influence atitudes towards education. Certainly for the type of students I'm researching background and the contrast between family life and school life plays a big role.

Would be interesting to hear the attitudes of your parents/family/larger group of friends toward education at the time you were in school. As well as your opinion on what other factors contributed to your attitude to education at the time you were in school.

I'd be surprised if they did get checked a lot, depending on the job of course. The older I get, the more confident I am that I could probably get away with pretending to have A levels at the very least.

I did well overall with some ups and downs but was pushed a lot by my parents. In college I eventually took the path of least resistance (ditching biology for languages) so I could train more, and in the end managed to land a well-paid desk job where I can rot away til I retire. Win?
