Probably too far away for you guys, but this is a nice combination of strongman events plus the chance to do all the traditional highland games stuff as well... http://www.lewishighlandgames.co.uk/events/

And a great piss up Saturday night! No Sunday ferry! If anyone fancies it, drive to Ullapool, leave the car and go over as a foot passenger. Taking cars over is extortionate.

They don't have any classes like novice, Neil. Just a strongman comp plus loads of traditional highland games heavy events. You can enter some or all of the heavy events separately from the strongman event. Caber tossing, anyone?

From the website:

"The Caber is tossed for accuracy not distance. The judge must "call it" just as the stick hits the ground. A side judge will sometimes be used to determine if the caber rotated thru 90 degrees, if not, its a "Fifer" and not counted."

A FIFER!!! WTF!! Unhappy

Martin - my family is from Lewis (live in Laxdale, just outside Stornoway), used to spend every school holiday up there. Still love the place and get back fairly regularly (my dad's the rector of the school up there nowadays). There's half a chance I'll be up there during this as I was looking to get up for a long weekend in July. More likely to compete in the highland dancing than the highland games though.

Wow! Small world, isn't it? My family home is technically part of Laxdale because it's the 'country' side of Perceval Road. I've not been back as much as I would have liked in recent years because my mother has developed old woman syndrome and refuses to allow the dogs to visit with me (although my sister's two GSDs are welcome when she calls in and my other sister's boyfriends rough collie is as well!!), which means it's far more difficult to get up, plus I've dug my heels in a bit and thought "if you're putting barriers in the way I'm not prepared to jump them." Probably something I'll look back and regret, but there you go. As you say, it's a great place, and probably far removed from the image that 'Outer Hebrides' conjures up in most minds.
