Well i dont mean the technical definition of a recession, but a period of low growth and relatively high unemployment e.g. in the 70s Germany boomed and Britain was in a "recession" in the late 90s early 2000s Britain boomed and Germany struggled.

Trump will get another four years Member 126, 16707 posts SQ 160, BP 110, DL 225495.0 kgs @ 75kgs UnEq | Cuddles said: Do you think the UK model (exactly the same principles as the EU and Eurozone ie no internal protectionism, common external protectionism, free movement of goods, services, people, single currency etc) cannot work then? Or is it your argument limited to the EU? Per capita levels just in England alone are drastically different across the regions. Are these principles not exactly the same as in the USA? which, in many ways, is similar in operation to the EU? Only with states rather than countries. The big difference between these examples is the strength of political union along with the monetary Union. The lack of that, alongside the huge variation in types of economy, and the fact a lot of the smaller economies cooked their books to make the fiscal requirements to join the EU, doomed the project from the start. It was ok when times were good but the first big crisis the euro has had to deal with has shown its core weakness. You only need to look at the 'lazy' Greek rhetoric coming from Germany and the ww2 reparation claims coming from Greece to see that the EU needs much more than a common currency to keep all its members pulling in the same direction.

Member 4416, 1369 posts SQ 210, BP 175, DL 240625.0 kgs @ 122kgs UnEq | I'm pro-free movement and easy trade, but for sure I want GB to have its own laws, set against its own agenda and keeping the pound would be nice, although I don't have any issue with the euro in principle. I'm off to Turkey next year. I can get 10days all inclusive at at good resort for £407. Can't get that in Greece right now p.s. I got burned in 1st week of April in Crete last year. 20 degrees can be deceiving.

Do you think that the EU itself is fundamentally flawed? or just the monetary union? (and im not trying to subtly make a point, genuinely interested in your thoughts)

I'm curious do you think the USA, Canada, Australia or China suffer by sharing a joint constitution and laws amongst their respective states/regions? I think this is a large part of what makes them a coheirant socio/economic power. EU in contrast is sadly an incoherent jumble aimlessly stumbling along while loosing its historical influence in world affairs. I hope if UK and Greece leave that it allows the rest of Europe to come together as a proper world power to keep europeans place in leading world affairs.

The locals were all unanimous in their views that the Syria situation was to blame. I hope it recovers. I like Turkish people.

nothing to hide, please follow my life on webcam Member 255, 3732 posts | Is not a part of the problem that no matter what state you come from in the U.S. you still see yourself as an American first, whilst people who live in Europe see first see themselves citizen of the country they live in not Europe and are therefore more interested in doing what's right for their own country?

The guy is slowly becoming more and more hard-lined, and seemingly more and more power hungry. I think Turkey will have a much better medium term future if he doesn't get enough seats to change the constitution.

Europe is deployed to 30 counties as peacekeepers. It has the best record of promoting human rights and its citizens have more rights and enjoy a better standard of living than citizens from other parts of the world. I think this is a measure of our success vs other world powers. EU has the best record on trying to fix issues that treaten life on earth like global warming. We are the world leaders of science, technology and innovation. We also are where most political philosophy originated in 18,19 and 20 century and I believe whatever philosophy comes next to allow world society to develop will be European. We are the biggist world market and can thus control a large portion of world commerce especially if we come together as one nation to forward European shared values and goals.
