I've missed an update - been away on a work trip to US which messed up my training royally. Had 6 full days off and am still tired and sleep deprived due to having a mega busy weekend as well.

Downside is that i think i have missed my bench peak, but never mind, it has all been good.

thursday 7th:

quick squat session:
8x60
5x100
3x140
3x160

friday 8th:

bench press
8x60
5x80
3x100
1x110
1x120 - very easy
fx130 - just awful, head not in it.

push press
5x50
5x65
3x75
3x3x85kg

narrow grip 3 board press
12x100kg

I wouldn't worry too much about the bench, you still made excellent progress on the routine. You need to come up with a plan on improving your first rep, being able to fail the first rep and then do 6 more ain't gonna cut it for powerlifting.

Maybe you could try doing heavy negatives at say around 110%, but rather than having a spotter lift it straight away you could practice keeping the tension on the bottom for a few seconds. It may work, it may not, could be worth a shot...

aye, that could work, also long pause benching, 3 secs or so could also make a differece.

Lets see about that next year. I am thinking of running the russian routine again though, this time with 112.5kg - but because i hate the little plates i would probably try to do it 115, which sounds just way too heavy.

I would recommend you go heavy with the pauses tho, you just seem to fall apart under heavy weight and its not a lack of strength, triples with 125 must be good for almost 140.

auch, that was painful!

nah, its just stupid to be playing with the change when you could just use bigger bucks. Also, there is only one pair of them so if someone is using them as a heel raise in their quarter squats because arnie did so too, i am f**ked.

The lack of plates is no excuse - I have two pairs of 1 and 1/4qtrs - I would be more than happy to lend you a pair Happy

Be careful with the extra long pauses. I know a lot of people who say that they put a lot of pressure on their shoulders, and with your shoulder problems, it might not wise.

Joni, I think that's a bit of a daft attitude to 1.25kg plates. I mean, I know you're not being entirely serious and I don't want to sound po-faced about it, but the difference between optimal training and overtraining can often be very small (Arthur Drechsler quotes an example in The Weightlifting Encyclopaedia with 2.5kg in working weights making a crucial difference in the actual training of a top WLer) and it seems silly to insist for macho reasons that you might as well use 115 instead of 112.5, or whatever - because you could be sabotaging a cycle of benching just for some psychological posturing.

I agree with Jonathan. I think this case is particularly true for bench press - certainly for me anyway. Without the 'little biscuits' I'm sure my progress would have been miles slower. 5kg jumps can be very big - particularly when they are way more than 5% of 1RM as they were for me a few months ago!

Hardly anyone uses them apart from us so that's not really an issue.
