Yeah. Shen Zhen’s strongest man 105s on the 17th. Events are:

105 farmers 15 drop 15
Max dumbbell (I’ve just been training with regular dumbbells and can’t go past 55)
83kg strone to shoulder (ive been training with a sandbag)
Log 95kg reps in 60s
250lb sandbag distance in 60s
Mas wrestling

Obviously my pressing sucks but the rest I should do ok on.

It’s Chinese folks and expats both. Some of China’s strongest will be there, but the ones that I know of that are good are all in the opens. I live a few hours train journey away from SZ but I have a friend who runs a strongman gym there and I visit fairly frequently. HK has a really good strongman gym too with some very strong guys.

thats interesting to hear. I remember there was a chinese athlete at wsm a few years back and wondered if there was any sort of scene or whether they just found a strong chinese guy to fill the spot because they were the host country.

I was in HK in 95-96 just before the handover so I imagine the place has changed quite a bit since then.

There’s not many guys into it, but I think interest might slowly be growing. Mostly just one gym near Beijing and then a few guys who do a bit alongside powerlifting. One that might be competing in the opens apparently was at WSM a few years back so it might be the same dude. He’s a big chap. 6’4” and 190kg supposedly

I think 'big' might be a little bit of an understatement if those are indeed his stats!

Looks not far off, to me (that’s Shivlyakov next to him I think). Not sure how strong he is though.

Cheers and will do!

# Mock comp

1. Max DB 55 x 1 x 2 sets
2. Farmers 105 15m drop 15m 21s
3. 250lb sandbag carry 60s 101m — PB
4. Log 95kg x 2 — PB but disappointing. Legs fatigued after previous events.
5. Sandbag to shoulder. 200lb x 4 reps. One went over the shoulder. Slight tweak in neck so cut it short a bit.
6. Mas wrestling. 3 x 3 bouts

Overall ok. Fatigue from the sandbag carry affected me more than anticipated. First time really pushing that but I think it’s a good event for me so may not need to go that hard in the comp. That’s the last heavy session before go time.

Shen Zhen’s Stongest Man 2021

Weigh in:

I weighed in 24 hours before. After 30 minutes on a bike and a lot of spitting, o got down to 104.8. Then stupidly hit the cookies and Gatorade a bit too hard and felt sick all afternoon! Lots of liquids and carbs and back up to 111.3 (my Monday weight) the next morning though.

Pre-Comp

Discovered my class only had one other guy. Very young Chinese chap but looked in ok shape. More powerlifting background than strongman.

1. Event 1 — Max Monster Dumbbell
I had been training with normal dumbbells. My goal going into the comp was 60kg.

First single 45 was easy but found positioning on the shoulder a nightmare. Couldn’t work out where to put it.

Missed second attempt of 52.5 for same reason. This weight should be easy for me. Skipped third.

Other guy got 60kg on second attempt, failed his third.

2. Event 2 — Farmers
This was 105kg per hand 15m, drop and turn 15m.

Felt very light, got 18 seconds for a PB.

Other guy 26s. So far 1:1.

3. Event 3 — Log Press
90kg for reps. We only have a 10” log, so only my second time trying a 12” log (last time 2 years ago).

Hit 2 reps. I had been hoping for 4 or 5 so disappointed (based on 93kg x 4 in training). The other guy got 6 I think.

2:1.

4. Event 4 — Atlas Stone to Shoulder

Second time I’ve touched an atlas stone (last time was 2 years ago). Weight was changed from 83kg to 100kg on the week of the comp. Shouldered one, couldn’t lap the second rep. I found this very frustrating — I can one-motion a 125kg sandbag to the chest so was surprised at how bad this was. My most disappointing event. 1 rep vs. 3 (I think) for the other guy.

3:1

5. Event 5 — sandbag for distance
125kg sandbag for 90s. The time was changed from 60s to 90s the week of the event. As we’d been training 60s I thought I’d have a break at around half way. Unfortunately I couldn’t stand up from my break haha! So I got 60m in around 45s and sat out the rest. Fortunately the other guy could only get around 50m using the whole 90 seconds.

3:2

6. Event 6 — Mas Wrestling
Beat the other chap easily on this. I have good grip and long wingspan whereas he was more of a squatter/bencher type build so it was easy.

3:3

Also went against the only guy in the opens. He had 35kg of bodyweight on me and beat me 2 to 1. Was nice to beat him once though.

# Sum Up:
Lost (came second) based on comp rules. Overall disappointing, but learned some lessons. I think I trained with too high specificity and sacrificed brute strength as a result. Had I been doing rows, incline bench, deadlifts etc. I think I’d overall have done better given I wasn’t able to actually train 4 out of the 6 events in the way I’d actually be competing.

Turns out, for eg. that sandbag to shoulder doesn’t prepare you for atlas stone to shoulder in any meaningful way. Also 2 events changed week-of: no complaint that’s strongman, my fault. Lesson learned and had a lot of fun.

Stone ripped up by forearms and popped my ear a bit; lost a callous on mas wrestling so bleeding from four places. Overall feeling pretty good though.

Now to lose a bit of fat then building up those pressing & squatting muscles!

Video coming.
