Member 3704, 25 posts SQ 175, BP 140, DL 200515.0 kgs @ 92kgs UnEq | hi guys tonight i decided to do the frame carry as it had been a while since i tried it last. got a novice comp coming up and the weight will be arround 230kg. 170kg over 15m easy enough - Hands were sore 210kg over 15m easy enough - Hands were very very sore i was trying the twist grip tech ive seen some people do, but not sure if it helped of hindered me. its where you grip the handles with your palms facing up so when you stand up they twist on the grip i assume for better grip. but i squeezed as hard as i could to stop it slipping, half way down my hands felt stone cold. and when i got to the end my hands were freezing. i assume this was me squeezing all the blood out of them. any tips or advice as i think this will be one of my weakest events.

Member 3704, 25 posts SQ 175, BP 140, DL 200515.0 kgs @ 92kgs UnEq | Well grip really. Grip it in fingers or palm best way to save as much pain as possible.

The saddest part is that the only way to improve your grip if it is not naturally good is to train it very regularly. It does get batter, and you get used to the pain a bit, but it doesn't go away. Youwill just have to try different ways of holding it and see what works for you. hand size and shape has a bearing on what works. If it hurts, but you are not dropping it then you have nothing to worry about, just walk quicker so it hurts for less time.

Cutting off the blood supply to your hands for 30-40 seconds isn't likely to do you any damage (although I am not a Dr...) Work on being quicker then you dont have to hold it for as long...

Grass fed Member 1147, 7710 posts SQ 220, BP 185, DL 272.5677.5 kgs @ 113kgs UnEq | get your hand round as far as you can too start, get as much of the meat of your hand on the bar as you can hurt even more, but you get a better grip

Member 3704, 25 posts SQ 175, BP 140, DL 200515.0 kgs @ 92kgs UnEq | cheers guys, was a pleasure watching the both of you at the scottish final martin this is the method i was using last night hurt like hell but never lost grip. i assume the stronger the grip the less it hurts or is it just the less chance of injury from callus tares etc id think the stronger your grip the less the handle moves in your hand so the less its going to damage your hand physically. if theres no real tech to it then ill just have to man up lol just have to keep telling myself the pain stops when i corss the line

You will notice the pain a lot less at the comp anyway, and if you look after your skin the chances of a tear are much reduced. I have never torn a callous yet (maybe my grip is too s**t though ha ha) I have a terrible grip, there is no way I could use any method other than squeezing in to the hand like you are doing, and i have recently moved my thumb round the side of the index finger rather than over the top, as my hands are very small. It has certainly helped.

I can vouch for this, they are about 0.2% of his calf size I find frame carry a lot better than farmers walk. A lot more stable so less pain in the grip department. But its down to so many varying factors (knurled or not, 1" or 2" handles etc). You would think knurled grip for farmers is the best as its easier to grip , but i actually prefer smooth handles because it causes less pain . And like was said above , come the competition you will notice the pain a whole lot less because you will be so focussed

That causes me issues as well. I often do log before my deadlifts and sometimes my hands are pretty tender by the time i get around to deads , it can be annoying thinking about your hands more than actually pulling the weight.

Interesting, I actually find i do better with farmers or holds if i have done something that tests the grip a little but not too much like log cleans first. Guess we are all different

Member 3704, 25 posts SQ 175, BP 140, DL 200515.0 kgs @ 92kgs UnEq | is it better to leave the callus's on or cut them off?? yesterday before doing all this i sat and shaved them off so dont know if that made any difference. saying that i dont think a little hard skin would help with 210+kg is in your hands. lol my weakest events for this comp are yoke, frame and chain drag. basically anything that live outside and i dont get a chance to do often, got to love scottish weather..

Personally I dont mind the area of skin being a little hardened as long as it is not raised. Rubbing it down better than cutting it off I think. I spoke to Dave horne, the grip guy, and he said train it regular, but if it feels like your hands are tearing up take a break, as a tron hand will hurt performance more than a missed session. He also said he steals his wife's handcream on a regular basis, and suggests others do the same.
