Just wondering if any on here are fireman, or have done the practical test?
I have mine on Sunday at short notice and I'm wondering how difficult it is? I know ive got to get level 8.6 on the bleep test but no idea how my fitness will hold up against that.
Thanks for any input in advance

No idea mate, but good luck!

I went for fire service years ago but failed psychometric assessment, apparently I don't value other cultures as much as they'd like

I'm a firefighter in Strathclyde, 8.6 on the beep test is very doable, mind you, when I done it I was 24 weighing 10st and had a 30inch waist.

When I done the practical tests, they also had hose runs which was pretty hard and a strength test which was embarrassingly easy at the time.

Best of luck with it, only you will have an idea if you're fit enough.

If I were you, I'd be finding out exactly what the other practical tests are, and if they involve specific equipment ie. hose, get along to a fire station and ask to use the kit to practice. They will be more than willing to help.

8.6 on the bleep test is nothing mate, barely even jogging youll be fine for that one at least.

I'm wholetime in Manchester. I think most fire services use the national standard physical tests now: http://www.fireservice.co.uk/recruitment/physical

That website is a good source of info and the forum is pretty good as well.

The tests themselves are straight forward, just remember to do EXACTLY what you are told to. It's amazing how many people fail for not following the instructions they are given.

When I did it if you failed one thing that was it and you were sent off the yard back to the changing room. Those left at the end had to do the bleep test.

Yea I have a list of the tests. It's the bleep test first and if you fail that you're out.
Everything else looks dead easy, ladder climb, victim evacuation, equipment assembly, equipment carry, and confined spaces, I've watched a video for it all on YouTube and it's all straight forward.
Like I say my fitness is the one thing that worries me
Thanks for the input

I failed it many years ago when I was much lighter and much less unfit Grin

I could only get to level 7. One thing I've learnt is my fitness needs to improve. I hate doing cardio too

How did this go by the way?

also what do you have to do for the confined spaces bit?

I failed the beep test mate, as much down to nerves as anything else I think.
Didn't get chance to do the confined space bit but it was crawling through sort of a maze of small corridors in a mask

If you've got a decent level of fitness then the rest of the day would be a breeze.
Definitely a decent career to get into.
