Who is your favourite strength athlete of all time from across the different worlds of lifting?

Mine is unsurprisingly Koklyaev... he is the best all-round athlete I've seen in my lifetime, and witnessing a lot of his lifts in person was a great experience.

I'm sure this question will be more interesting for the guys who have been around for longer - I'm sure there have been some great strongmen and even greater olympic lifters that have come and gone.

Alan Fairclough

142.5 cln & press
175 C&J
227 front sqt
all at early 90K & nearly 40 years ago... probably all done still pissed or badly hung overWink "They're not queing up to do that"

Recent times I'd go for the only British man to ever lift 500lb overhead. Such an impressive feat of strength it is I'm sure you all know who I'm talking about???

I thought Alans c&j record was 180? Or was 175 is his competition best maybe? Strong f**ker either way Grin

Who has done the 500lber then? Was it Del? Sadly I guess we don't see or hear much of British olympic lifting these days unless you're inside the loop.

I don't know many olympic athletes or powerlifters but I Always enjoyed seeing Geoff Capes in the world's strongest man. Him and J-P Sigmasson (sp?)-great stuff.

He cleaned 180's for fun but never jerked more than 175
Del topped out at 210 in the games 2002, so no not him. Shame on you allConfused Even google seems confused

Im gonna really struggle to pick one, so here's a few of my favourites:

Eddy Coan - still the best ever powerlifter imo, maybe not the strongest, but the best powerlifter.

Zydrunas Savickas - Sickeningly strong, and bloody fast to boot, and they say big guys cant move.

Gary Taylor - along with Capes, these were the first guys to really turn me on to strongman, and they won, and they were British.

There are plenty of other guys whose records I admire greatly, but having never watched them compete or followed their careers as they happened, it'd be hard for me to call them my favourite (eg Jim Williams, Don Reinhoudt, Kaz, JPS, Taranenko, Alexeyev etc etc)

Favourite oly lifter of all time is Dimas though, by a mile. I loved watching that guy lift. Poetry on a platform.

I'm guessing Louis Martin?

And I remember being impressed when I went to watch Sandow, of course!

Favourite to watch lift was Savickas, amazing athelete in every sense. Even when Pudz was on top, I had a feeling Savickas would overtake him at some point. Dimas too, a guy with no limits who really enjoys his lifting.

In terms of stuff i've read, Pat Casey and Doug Hepburn are my favourites and have influenced me most in training and mentality.

Im glad some of the old names got a mention here such as Jim Williams and Paul Anderson, Alexeyev. We always tend to think of the bigger lifters but Mike Bridges and Precious Mckenzie are worth a mention too. I always enjoy watching Hossein Reza Zadeh olympic weightlifting. I'd go along with all the strongmen names mentioned too.

Gary Talyor would be pretty high up. Seeing him win WSM when I was a kid def inspired me to get into weights latter on.

My favourite strongman is Mr Capes.

As for the first Britain to lift 500lb overhead, I believe that Gary Taylor 'behind the neck jerked' over 500 pounds. I believe that he may hold the "world record" for the lift.
