Do you not worry about becoming a jack of all trades master of none so to speak?
I personally love the fact you do all this cool s**t but if your main goal is to become better at strongman I think a lot of the stuff you do is pointless and even counter productive.

He's Sugden's own Larry Wheels, only Paul is on more Creatina!!

In all seriousness, you have very impressive athletic qualities!

Agreed. All the stuff Paul does is awesome, we can agree on that front.

Strongman of course, i don't worry about that, I can't think of anything I do that isn't beneficial to being a better strongman. All my training is thought out and put in for a reason. What would you say is counter productive? I am curious to see what you think

Session 1 athletics track

Big warm up

4x10m sprints

4x20m sprints

2x40m sprints

2x60m sprints

1x100m moderate pace

Done. Really enjoying the sprinting, don't feel beat up after it like last week either.

Was going to do a second session but everything is getting moved around at the gym so ended up just helping. Annoying but will only happen every few years so it's alright.

What strongman event do you think is improved by the ability to do a front flip? And further on whatever that event is do you not think there's something that doesn't involve going upside down at 140kg that would be more beneficial.

So the gymnastics thing is two fold. I'm not saying that a front flip is some perfectly chosen exercise but let's go with gymnastics and tumbling stuff in general.

Firstly it is of course gpp not anything event specific. So the first point is Core strength and imbalances, I used to get awful back pumps as a lot of lifters do, I was suggested that it was due to a weak core so I did lots of core work and back pain disappeared.

I noticed that when I slacked off it came back so started doing it all the time with no breaks. I realised that if my abs were just strong enough to prevent being in pain then they must be pretty far off what would constitute a good balance of strength compared to my back and therefore would be decreasing my overall performance.

Gymnastics is great because you have to have a high amount of dynamic tension for the core without having a massive load through your joints like most lifts would cause. I don't feel sore after a gymnastics session which as you know is brilliant for a strongman to have.

The second big thing is injury prevention, most top strongmen are seemingly broken most of the time and after nearly every comp, touch wood so far I always seem to be one of the freshest and least in pain after every comp I do.

There's definitely a reason for that and all this funky movement stuff that I do now and have done when I was younger means that my body is used to moving on different planes and doesn't freak out if it gets in an awkward spot. For example I can roll my ankle a little bit and be fine because I have the rom and strength to take the impact and not damage anything. I see a lot of strongmen do the same thing and f**k themselves for a few days or weeks.

It's durability and its often overlooked but it's a massive part of strongman. If you get even a small injury at a comp you're at a massive disadvantage, if you can stay healthy you're going to beat a lot of guys that can't. Massive answer I know but I know you are actually bothered about my reasoning and it is something I have thought about a lot.

I appreciate the long answer! Wouldn't have asked otherwise. All makes sense, I'd have thought there'd have been more impact stress on the joints from the jumping/landing etc so that's what I most curious about.

You make a good point but I've become very good at landing haha I did a force plate test jumping off a 3 foot plyo box and landed with less than 30kg of force
