Is static strength the only measures of strength?
The best strongman won worlds this year
Strength imo isnt about just standing in one place lifting s**t
If you want to do comps were the strongest guy stood in one place wins then PL is place too be

Exactly, it's strongman not powerlifting. The moving events at worlds are really heavy so its not just running around.

Jc you said it, the best strongman won not the strongest..... So why is it called worlds strongest man then? Riddle me this.

You asked if I would like heavy yoke and farmers? I would much rather have heavy farmers that i do not have the grip strength to do ( hence you have to be strong to do them) than ones so light everyone, even me, can do and it's just a foot race

Still the events are the events and so be it.

I just don't want strongman to become the place to go if you are not strong enough to do power lifting
See you soon buddy

And Jc and all I have to say again I have never said all lifts should be max lifts have I ? Yes I believe all SM events should have 1 max lift event in it ( to mix it up) but I just feel no one what to see someone doing 20 reps on anything.... I certainly don't want to do them.
Moving events great but the static ones should not be a cardio challenge as well.

Well if I can defend myself, I would have no problem with heavy farmers, yoke or shield , always happy to be pushed myself.
I was not suggesting max lifts on all the static stuff was I ? Still reps but just reps on a heavier weight and it is quicker and easier to do the 2 weights option on these events.
As for the strongest man still winning ...... We all know that is not the case. Who won the worlds strongest man this year? It was not the one man in the field with the heaviest overhead lift, log, dead lift and squat was it.

Tbf Brian won the Deadlift easily.

Strongman is a test of everything, having the biggest overhead and or squat certainly doesn't make you the strongest. Tbh I wouldn't even have 2 overheads in this comp as I think a third of a comp based on overhead strength is too much. The idea is to cover all bases but it's Marc's preference.

Hiliker is right though, it's about covering costs a lot of the time and for a qualifier it has to be that way.

Also I do think Marc is right on two weights too. It's quite hard to follow for the crowd.

We can all complain about comps and events and Marc has said the uk's will be heavy along with Ben saying England's having at least one max. I agree that these big lifts you wanna see at national comps when it matters.

Anyway just my 2p.

Karl, why not turn up and qualify and save a massive Deadlift or overhead for the big comps like your Deadlift at britains last year.

Marc if guys want it heavier I'm happy for you to use my 162 axle on the end of the axle medley, no one can complain about that being light, same weight we used at wsm in qualifiers

Surely the 2 weight options is something to think about, Will uses this set up at his St Ives comps and they fill up within 24hours.

Would it not tempt more people into the sport or at least some from other weight categories

I see what you're saying, but you and you only will be the one doing 20 reps on aything

the weights are probably decent for 90% of lifters in that comp (ie. the 240 deadlift...the majority will pull 300ish, so 240 is 80%, so they'll get anywhere between 6-10 reps with 80%)

I think in a qualifier everyone should have the chance to win an event. So doing the 2 different weights and having 1 rep of heavier beats any of the lower weight is restrictive and makes an event pointless for someone who cannot pull the heavier weight.

For you Karl, 1 rep of 280kg is nothing, not even worth a walk in the park :P
Where as 240kg for some others will be 85%+ of 1rm. They might not even have a 280 dead in them.

I prefer the points for a rep at different weights, so even only doing the lightest option can still score good points (think the blocks at Englands this year).

Is running about with weights in your hands or on your back a measure of strength? Could an untrained person do them? Or rather, "footrace", could a sprinter do them better than a strongman?

squirrel said:Marc can you put me in please mate as I have to do this to qualify, sorry that sounds a bit "I will qualify", that is not how it was meant.....more I don't lick the events. I know this may get a load of people moaning at me but.......

I thought I was doing strongman not crossfit? when did we start doing strongman comps with not a single max lift event in it? Plus all the weight are really low, for god sake some (most) for the weights are heavier in the 90kg class. I know if we set the weights low more people will enter but come on.....

I was hoping for this to be my last year at 105 and I wanted to leave the year with all the max lift records for the log, axle and deadlift. (again I know it sounds a bit big headed those of you that know me know I am not like that)but how am I going to do that if no-one wants to put on max lift events in their comps. I am surprised no one what to do this because it makes their comp memorable, everyone talks about the big lifts or record lifts not the he did 8 reps with the log!

as for qualifying comps like this, if you must do the reps thing, why not do the 2 weights option. 110 log or 130 log, 240 deadlift or 280 deadlift, any reps on the heavy one beats all on the lower one? its not a set up or time issue it would take less than a minute to set up. you would still get guys entering as they could do the lower weight, its a win win??

ok set the abuse begin.

love you all Tongue
