Has anyone managed to knock it on the head completely or at least greatly reduce it?

For me its gotten to be a habit and one I'd like to kick.

I drink most nights and I'm fine with it...

I changed from rose to red wine then a bottle can last more than 1 day...

I drink very little now and have done since 1988. Prior to that I used to drink on a daily basis and more than was wise. I was brought up at a time when almost everyone drank and there was very little option, when in a pub but to have beer or spirits. It was therefore incomprehensible to me that you could enjoy yourself without drinking.

I had the extreme good fortune to be diagnosed in my early thirties with the beginning of liver damage. As it was in its infancy I only needed to abstain to fix it. The prospect of this made me very sad as I believed alcohol necessary to have fun.

How wrong I was. I am now very happy to report that three decades of minimal drinking has resulting in absolutely zero loss of fun.

I'm a Drinker...I can go years without a drink but once I start...one is too many and two is never enough.

Funnily enough, though, when I'm not drinking it's never an issue, can easily go out and drink soft drink or sit in the pub all day without feeling temptation....I do still need to have a drink in my hand, so Ice Water is my friend here.

I gave up for 3 years after going a bit overboard with drink and drugs. I didn’t like it. I felt left out of the fun in the pub. People also seemed suspicious I was taking notes of their drunk escapadesHappy

I went to gigs, galleries, boxing, cycled everywhere, did classes like cooking and a degree. Filled the time and let me stay sober longer than I should have.

I drink now, but like to have 2-3 nice whiskey and one beer. Friends are happier and I have more fun.

I don't think there is a drink I don't like and I'm not a binge drinker but it's pretty much an everyday occurance.

If I could go from everyday to just twice a week I'd be happy.

Did anyone who managed it go cold turkey or gradually reduce it day by day?

I suspect the original question should be answered cut back. Im not an addictive person but what I do do is only drink what I order with the weekly sho..

2 or 3 badger beers blandford fly (now flyer, what a shyte name)

and 2 bottles red wine.

I dont go out and pick up white lightning!

Thats maybe the key to moderation mate Wink

I quit for a year over 20 years ago after suddenly realising how much I was drinking. I very rarely drink more than a couple, or a couple of times a week, now. I've often gone a calendar month without a drink "by accident", as it were. If the health correlations are to be believed I probably ought to drink a bit more Happy.

Breaking the habit is the main thing. Once it's gone and forgotten it's easy to drink lightly, rarely, and sociably, unless you're one of the very unlucky minority with genuine dependency.

Stop popping into the co-op of an evening and buying a bottle of wine, or a six pack.

Stop "rewarding" normal behaviour - such as going to the gym, or finishing a day's work - with a 'few drinks'.

Try and set one day a week for drinking.

Happy

When I used to bodybuild I’d easily go 2-3 months without drinking, however, I’ve found as I’ve got older I do drink more than in my youth but the ‘binges’ as less frequent. I might drink 2-3 nights a week but on the nights I do drink 2 of them with only include maybe 1 or 2 drinks at the most. Maybe a couple more on a weekend night.

As long as it doesn’t interfere with my ability to do other things I don’t see it as a problem.

I drink now only on the weekend a few glasses of wine mainly with my wife.
Depending if I am driving that weekend.

If I watch a sporting event maybe a couple of beers.
Mainly like the 6 nations or rugby autumn events.

Christmas and any family holidays are the worse time of year because the family drink and I will to be social but I am more aware of alcohol and it perils more these days.

I do not drink any shorts at all, totally given them up completely.
Only red wine and beer these days.

I have not been drunk, sick or inebriated since my youth & 20's.

Heavy drinker no, social drinker yes.

I work with a lot of alcoholics and other addicts, the big thing is always finding the reason why you want/need to drink so much. They'll always be a reason for it and once you figure that out you can go about fixing it.
