I have some manila rope that I want to cut a couple of metres off. What is the best way to cut it and to stop the ends from fraying?

Also, what is the best knot to use to tie the end of it to a bar (it can be a permanent knot...)?

Thanks for any help.

my dad used to heat up and old knife to cut rope (it seals the ends as you cut)

Cut the end with a sharp knife, wrap the f**k out of the end in electrical or duct tape then tie a bowline knot. Its a self tightening knot that can always be undone regardless of how tight it gets.

you want to splice the ropes into eyelets IMO. This'll both stop the ends from fraying, and provide a way of fixing it to whatever you want.

I cut mine with a hand saw, and then covered it in super glue before wrapping it with duct tape.

Heat up the end of a sharp chisel and slowly push through the end of the rope Happy

Does manilla rope melt? It looks like it would burn.

I never got round to doing this, but am going to do it soon. I think I'm going to go with what Rico suggested, but may also try a bit of superglue (or melting) on the ends of the rope.

It's natural rope so it would burn. Hot glue from a glue gun would work well too.

PVA comes apart if it gets wet I find. Electrical tape is a good shout. Braiding is better, dipping in wood glue is fantastic!
As for the knot.
Bowline is the answer to a permanent knot.
