So.

If you’ve got past the ridiculous ‘click bait’ title and for this far.... I applaud you.

Question (phrased slightly better);

Do you think a fair proportion of people are just not ‘built’ for squatting? (Limb lengths etc)

Using myself as an example, I’ve always found squatting VERY unnatural and anytime I’m progressing with squats I tend to hurt myself (frequent lower back issues).

I’ve trained for ~12 years and have tried just about every ‘trick’ in terms of manipulating technique as well as a lot of flexibility + mobility work.... still, squats are very unnatural for me.

To give some context, I’m not a total noob (used to post here a lot a couple years back too), I’ve squatted 210kg at 80kg Bodyweight. This was a VERY tough rep and I built up to this over a long time. Right now I’d be surprised if I could squat 180kg.

On the other end of the ‘natural feeling’ spectrum (for me) deadlifts have always felt great.

Deadlifted 282.5kg and feel even after several months of not training deadlifts (at all) I could manage a 260+.

Right. Hope that made some sense.

Reason for the post, more than just curiosity, is that I’m tempted to get back into powerlifting next year and the poverty squats will need the majority of my attention if I want to total anything half decent. More than likely will compete as a 74/75kg with the intention of going 200+ for the squat as a minimum (to ensure 600+ total).

Do it! Come back to powerlifting. Every one has one bad lift. It dosent mean it cant be worked on or improved.

I've not seen your squats but I'd probably just do speed squats, and put more effort into supplementary movements where you feel you won't get hurt. Can't total anything if you f**k your back up and remember powerlifting is won by a bigger total, makes no odds what you lift on each lift individually.

deadlifter leverages don't help, but you also are 77kg and quite lean (i.e. tall for weight) looking in avatar.

these two factors outside of specific leverages do not make for a good squat.
guys squatting big in any weight class are thick set.

i bet if you bulked to 100kg+ it would be far bigger.

This covers it for me. Equipped lifting changes for the rules slightly, but for raw squats you need a certain kind of core 'solidity' that just isnt there in taller, leaner guys.

Essentially, you wouldnt try to balance an egg on a spoon handle.

I think if you can pull over 280, then you have plenty of potential to build a bigger squat than 210. However I'd say, bulk up to build your squat. Why compete at 75kg? If there's a record to be set fair enough. Otherwise why restrict your body weight to 75 when your goal would be to move more mass

Erm,

A natural squatter will have a long spine and short legs; but will squat higher bar and narrow stance.

Compare that with a non-natural squatter; long legs short spine.

Ironically, the latter is best suited to having a good 'powerlifting' squat.

Everybody must be suited to one or the other; people that are s**t at squatting will probably have the most normal limb lengths you can find... they can't capitalise on any technique!

I'm the latter. I have quite long legs, so I sit back and push my knees out. I have no problem hitting depth. My stance is slightly wider than shoulder width.

Long legs long spine.
Low bar super wide stance, as wide as the mono will allow.

I think some things need to be clarified Grin

-I’m just over 5ft 6” (I’m far from tall and lean). To be 100kg would effectively be a path to morbid obesity closely followed by death. Painful death. Painful fat death.

-Mr. Savage: Agreed, a total wins in PL... but when giving away SO MUCH one the squat (the lift with the potential for the 2nd largest proportion of the total....) that needs to be focused on. My ass can not make up for the deficit in a bigger bench and deadlift.

-At 80kg I’m not particularly lean. The heaviest I’ve been is 84/85kg (competed in strongmam u90kg and then subsequently u80kg).

-No interest in continuing with the strongman. Reason: My spine seemingly can’t handle all the weird and wonderful events (yoke and stones mainly). Looking for some longevity and to not be a total knacker when I’m 40+
Also. Taking ALL DEM DRUGS is of no interest to me. Unfortunately seems to be the necessity.

Pulling 280 natty at your weight is impressive man.
Would you consider uploading some videos of your squat?
