spot on Iain, some studies also say that too much pre/post workout simple carbs blocks gh release.

I have 40g whey and approx. 75g oats just before I leave work to go to the gym, then same again when I get home from the gym, followed by a proper meal an hour later.

Naaa. Optimum nutritions stuff is the tastiest protein powder out there imo. Mixes well easy.
