On one hand, the negative part of the lift is very important for hypertrophy and strength. On the other hand, most injuries occur during the eccentric phase of the lift, and dropping it causes an almighty crash which turns the heads of all the attractive girls.

So do I just drop it after I've locked it out or am I better off controlling it?

A very good lifter told me when I was younger, 'if you want to deadlift more often, drop them, if you want to deadlift more, control them.'

Good quote from Cuddles.

I have no sensible rationale for this but I think dropping deadlifts makes people look like idiots unless the weight really is huge or it's a 1 rep max that you've barely locked out. Mostly it's attention seeking. I've seen guys drop deadlifts in the gym that are less than mine, and that's just pathetic (I'm not even a very good deadlifter). So if you attracted my attention I'd probably be thinking 'tit'.

Thanks for the help, guys; I think I'll definitely start controlling it from now on. What Cuddles says makes sense, too

This is interesting. Surprised a lot say control it down. I thought this would hurt my back and put it at risk of injury.

I just smash it down Confused

I say control it. If you can pick it up then you can put it down controlled. Winds me up when people drop a deadlift in the gym. It's just lazy and down right disrespectful of the equipment and who ever owns the gym..
Just my opinion...Unhappy

So is it disrepectful when an oly lifter drops a barbell from over head?

Thats Different Though!

A Oly Lifter Cant Lower The Weights As They Dont Use Muscle And Strength To Get It Above Head!

They Use Bar Acceleration And Technique with power!!

You Cant Exactly Lower A Bar Using Them! Grin
