Really interesting programme on Sky last night with a 30 minute special on Mark Cavendish. For those of you that don't know, Mark is by far and away the best cycling sprinter in the world (at least results wise), he is the current World Champion, Green Jersey winner etc and has won 20 Tour de France stages.

Now when I was growing up the two sports that were famous for being riddled with drugs were weightlifting and cycling. Cavendish argues that cycling is nothing like what it used to be. Apparently in 2009 and 2010 he was the most tested athlete on the planet. Having been tested more than 60 times each year. He says that now, when a famous cyclist tests positive they are hung out to dry with no regard for the image of the sport, quite simply they care more about being clean than the bad press a failed test might get the sport. The widely regarded best cyclist in the world (Cantador) is currently being hung out to dry by the cycling Governing body.

So is ridiculous levels of testing the way forward? Is cycling better for being cleaner? Cavendish himself says that cycling has changed, you no longer see some athletes doing superhuman things that in retrospect could only be achieved through drug use.

I'm not sure the sport has ever been as popular as it is today, so if the sport is at its cleanest and most popular, does the public really want to see superhuman freaks? or just good hard competition?

Discuss....

He's not going to say anything else though is he Olly? In weightlifting there is currently a publicity drive against doping and the face of that drive is Dimas, one of the most prolific lifters of modern times, and at a time when doping was still highly prevelant???

My cynical side would suggest that maybe doping in cycling is far more advanced than in any other sport, they were blood doping years before anyone else, and hence they are ahead of the testers perhaps.

Has the standard in the sport visibly dropped an sufficient amount to suggest that the previously massively drug assisted levels of performance are nowhere to be seen?

This is just the view of a cynical old scrote that doesnt really know that much about the sport in question, so please feel free to disregard.

Not at all mate, I'm cynical as f**k. Hence why I wanted to see other peoples views.

I did think 120 tests over 24 months is pretty impressive.

I would like to see what is humanly possible, anything goes.

Perhaps if we knew more about cycling it would be more obvious how cheating can happen. But we could only speculate.

I know of people working on gene therapy that can increase muscle mass and strength. Probably hasn't been used in sport as yet but makes me wonder if it could be an example of how to get around frequent doping tests for now.

Do you know for a fact that he has faced 120 tests?

No I dont. But I'm sure if I was bothered enough I could go and find out.

It would appear to be a bit foolish to, on national TV (knowing that it will be repeated all around the world and in countries where cycling is HUGE) to lie about something like this.

Especially when you have a legitimate claim to be the best in the world and maybe the best ever. Why would you bring the s**t on yourself? Why not just say nothing?

You know, saying 'I was the most tested athlete on the planet' is the kind of thing you would want to be true before saying.

So is it that the tests aren't taking place? That the many failed tests arent being published? (baring in mind that lots of them, including very high profile athletes have failed tests over the last few years) Or that the athletes (and their teams) are able to beat the testers whilst still heavily on?

It kind of has to be one of the three.

I don't suppose anybody truely knows but I find it a little sad that people automatically assume athletes must be taking something to reach the top.

Personally I'd like to think that athletes are now able to get away with less than ever before and sport in general is becoming cleaner. Using track cycling in Britain as an example where I believe the squad all train together in one place and their wherabout are know all the time. I don't see how they could possibly be taking anything without UK Sport co-operation in cheating which I'm sure isn't happening.

That being said I don't doubt there are some sports like weightlifting where drug use is very widespread

Perhaps that was to strong a statement however if all your training is done in one place your ability to avoid OCT testing without official help will be greatly reduced.

if there was to be any officue help, track cycling would be one of the main ones due to medal hopes.
