Sometimes for your training you want to know how much is your max Repetition Max for a particular day on a certain rep range. I was thinking that instead of rating your sets by feel, like:

100 kx x 5 @ 10

A good idea for beginners ho dont know themself that much to guess how much could they have done, is to do 1 rep more of the REP target you are serching for.

100 kg x 5 (+1 fail) = @ 10

Because if you stop at 5 and increase the weight and try 5 more and fail, you will never know how much was your 5RM @ 10 for that day.

So my idea is to aim for 1 rep more of the chosen rep range. I think this is the more acurate method to get to a real RM for a beginner.

That's it...

What happens if you try the extra rep and get it? You'll know what your 6 rep max is, but still won't know your 5 rep max.

NOT NECESSARILY. What if I could've got 7, but I stopped at 6 because no one told me what to do.

if your mission is to get to your 5RM go for 6 reps, there will be a set where you are going to fail and get with only 5 reps, your 5RM max.

If you want to find your 6RM go for 7 reps, there will be a set where you will fail and end up doing 6 reps, your 6RM.

If you can do more reps it dosent matter, the idea is to get to your desired RM. So you stop and add more weight to the bar and keep trying your Desired Rep + 1.

Oh now I see, you've created a formula for what we in Europe simply know as, 'doing as many reps as you can'.

lol is not doing as many reps as you can. That would be traiing to failure. What i'm saying here is how to target a specific rep range.

If you want to find your 3 reps max, i say you try 4 reps until you fail a rep, that will make you do 3.
The first few sets is going to be an easy task and you will have a lot more in the tank, but the idea is to find the RM not to do as many reps as you can.

so what your saying is, to find your 4 rep max, you find a weight you fail the 5th rep off,

Isn't that the idea anyway Confused
