I had a bad back injury in March from playing football, landed on one foot and something "went a bit funny" in my back, couldn't walk or stand up straight for a week.

Since then I've done bits and pieces of lifting, mainly kettlebells and bodyweight stuff but for the last 6/7 weeks I've been back in the gym.

Before the injury I had a 210kg dead and a 110kg bench, but these lifts just seem so far away now, has anyone got an experience of coming back from injury and being weak as hell?

I kind of feel like I'm climbing a mountain to just get back to where I was 6 months ago.

My whole training life feels.like I'm always trying to get back to where I was after an injury Unhappy

Take it slower than you think you need to.
Take all the EXPERT advice you can find.
Take every small step as a victory.
Keep your mind set on how to get back to your numbers, not the numbers themselves.

If it is only 6 months then think yourself lucky mate.

Can it be done? of course, many on here have had very serious injuries and come back significantly stronger.

Patience is key, dont try to rush it. If you are sensible you wil get back to your old weights in a shorter time than it took you to get there in the first place, but be sensible and dont push when your body says no.

Do you know what the actual injury was? as there is a lot of rehab protocols available for almost every injury, if you know what you have done.

I had years of injuries and surgeries, and I am much stronger now than i ever was before, but it took time, and patience

2 weeks out due to illness, still not recovered 10 months on. I'd definitely listen to what V.G said - work on what you want to get your numbers to, not what they are at the moment.

If you had asked me a couple of months ago I would of been delighted to just be doing something, so I do feel lucky in certain ways but now that I am back in the gym. It is tough psychologically to be being dominated by weights that weren't a big deal in the past. Went I got injured I was also in such a purple patch of form, making pb's every week.

In terms of the injury I'm not sure what it was, it was/still is on the lower left side of my back. I don't think it was disc related.

Patience is the key, of course. I need this tattooed on my forehead!

As Davy says , did you get your injury diagnosed? sounds like what I did , prolapsed disc , but it could be a multitude of things , if you havent seen a doc then its worth getting looked at to see if there is an underlying problem.

In my case it was 3 months before I got back in the gym ( happened in feb) and im only just feeling close to where I was , one thing thats come out of it is ive improved my core massively as i had neglected this in the past which led to the injury , the best way to look at any injury is that its a sign that something needs addressing in your training , if you can do this you will come back stronger than ever but as VG said it will take time , dont be scared to take things back to basics in the short term , you will reap the benefits long term Happy

Ok, you are coming back form injury, you shouldn#t be getting dominated by any weights, you should be using weights and rep ranges you can do comfortably.

Rehab work requires you being in control fo the weight, not picking high percentages and having them take control of you. This much is very important if you dont want to remain injured for a long time.

Ease back the weights, take a slightly different mental approach. Thinking about everything the same as before you got injured is only any good once you have rehabed the problem

Out of interest did you wet the bed at any time after the injury?

Have you soiled the bed since injury (urine or faeces)?

That's the only logical conclusion to draw from Milsy's question!!

And there was me thinking that the problem was my wrist wraps were in need of a wash.

Urine 2 nights in a row 1st week after injury I didn't even know this could be related to a lower back injury until I saw the specialist

No which I was rather annoyed about as I didn't see the specialist at 1st when it happend and was just fobbed off that it can happen after a lower back injury but was referd to special 10 days later at which point he said I should have had one but as it had stopped and he was happy with the examination he didn't see the need for it at that point

touch wood I am completely pain free now and have 100 percent mobility back just need to start the boring task of rebuilding the core muscle I damaged in the injury

Popping a disc lifting and spending the rest of life with urinary/fecal incontinence.. damn that sounds scary. Are you into musculoskelatal stuff where you work ? Is that a relatively rare thing ?
