I am proposing to hold a charity Strongman comp in Guildford in Surrey, April 2009. All funds to the Chase Childrens Hospice in Guildford (some of the kids will be attending). It will be a Novice AND Intermediate competition using the same events at different weights.

An entry fee of £30 (for charity remember) OR a minimum sponsorship of £50 (so if you want to enter for free, get the sponsorship - or else you will have to shell out £30 notes) - Sponsorship forms available on request.

The details below are my own suggestions- I am open to amendments and comments....PLEASE!!! as I have never done this before.

Proposal for Charity Novice and Intermediate level Competition APRIL 2009 – for Chase ‘Christophers’ Children’s Hospice.

NOVICE
#1 LOG 90kgs – first rep from the floor, then reps from chest in 70sec.
#2 DEADLIFT – 210kg –max reps in 70secs
#3 WASHING MACHINE CARRY- max time/distance
#4 MEDLEY
TYRE FLIP -320kg x4
SLED or CHAIN DRAG (??kg)25 meters
FARMERS WALK 100kg each hand 25 meters
*Fastest Time Wins*
#5 ATLAS STONES -120kgxreps

INTERMEDIATE
#1 LOG 110kgs – first rep from the floor then reps from the chest in 70sec.
#2 DEADLIFT - 240kg –max reps in 70secs
#3 WASHING MACHINE CARRY- max time/distance
#4 MEDLEY
TYRE FLIP -320kg x4
SLED or CHAIN DRAG (??kg) 25 meters
FARMERS WALK 120kg each hand 25 meters
*Fastest Time Wins*
#5 ATLAS STONES -150kgxreps

NO LIFTING STRAPS ON ANY EVENTS. TACKY ONLY PERMITTED ON STONES – NO TACKY ON ANY OTHER EVENTS.

BELTS, WRIST STRAPS, ELBOW AND KNEE WRAPS/SLEEVES ARE PERMITTED.

The order of the day will be;

The novices go first to complete #1. Then the Intermediates complete #1.
A scoring and ‘place’ board will be completed and read out.

Then #2, 3 etc. The final event will be the Intermediate Atlas Stones.

Hopefully, some of my 'Heavyweight' colleagues will do a little show lifting and, if I can wangle it, a bus pull - during the break at midday!!

SCORING: should be reflected in number of competitors
Ie – if there are 10 competitors then first place gets 9, second 8, third7 with the last place or incomplete scoring 0.

Looking at 8 competitors for each level –Total of 16 competitors

Over 5 events a maximum of 45 points.

There is no prize fund (its all for charity) but I will sort out some trophies from my own pocket and the kindness of my heart

Your comments please gents...

Firstly, hope you can set an exact date asap. When you do, please post the comp into the competition database as well.

The entry fee is a bit on the high side - its great that you are doing it for charity, but the competetors already have to travel from far and wide and so on. A lot of costs. Hope you would get some sponsors for the event and then maybe go around the spectators to get some cash. Hope that the entry fee doesnt chase anyone away from the competetor side, i think that sponsoring thing is a great idea and one i would go for. getting 50 quid should be fairly easy just among work mates.

Just out of interest when do you stop being a novice, quite like the look of this but I did 3 comps last year and with the sugden and 105 qualifier I`ll have done 5, but the open weights are way out of my league?

As Joni, really hope you raise money ect, but for the Lads themsleves to shell out is too much for me. IMO.
Esp with the amount of travelling, petrol costs ect.

The official date for this comp is Sunday 3rd May. Start time - 11am.

Pint, can I officially put my name down for the intermediate class please. My family live not far from Guildford. They've never seen me compete before (only on video!).

Thanks for the interest guys...

Yes it is all going ahead. May 3rd starting at 11:00 some slight changes to the initial events due to availability of equipment.

We have had massive interest from NOVICEs - way more than we need, however, intermediates have been less forthcoming but I remain hopeful!!

As for being able to enter into a weight class - I would say that if you have ever been in top three in that weight class before then you should be in the weight class above. I am not so bothered about how many comps you have done - I am a natural (drug free) lifter and will likely never move out of Novice/Intermediate class - dont think that this should stop me from being able to compete.

On the same note, please be fair, if you are likely to destroy the field, be up front and put yourself in the class above - I wont know until the day, but its a charity event and no one will be impressed if anyone deliberately puts themself in a lower class and ruins the comp....

I am seeing the council on 12th February to get the final risk assessment (I hope) completed and get the licenses I need - if all goes well I will then post the final full details of the comp, agenda for the day and SPONSORSHIP FORMS. Then, the first 8 in each class who come back saying they have the minimum sponsorship will be in...

AS for the entry fee - I made it high in order to encourage people to go for the sponsorship idea instead, however, the response has been so good I am going to scrap the entry fee and make it a compulsory sponsorship (many think I should call it £100 instead of £50 and lots of people have already agreed that this is fine - however, I dont want to alienate anyone who might not be able to raise that cash).

so I will post up after 12th Feb, then its the first 16 with the sponsorship who are in. BUT PLEASE DONT STOP AT £50 - IT IS SO WORTHWHILE, PLEASE GET AS MUCH AS YOU CAN...
Please have a look at the website and see what this is really all about - you think you are strong, you should see these kids....

www.chasecare.org.uk

Mr Cowdrey - your interest is duly noted, if you come back with the sponsorship, then you will be in (we are still a bit short of intermediates)- but the official date for entry will be after 12th feb when I have finished with the council...

Just noticed, on this site your avatar/picture has PB's listed below it.

If you are clearing 250kg+ deadlifts, 150kg+ bench and 200kg+ squats I would be considering that as Intermediate standard.

The novice class should be looking at forcing reps on a 210kg deadlift (I might get 2 or 3) - not getting 20+ reps. I will be competing at Novice and my top deadlift is 220, max squat of 160kg - this is the kind of range most of the Novices will be looking at.

We are all competitive, but think about the weights and challenge yourselves fairly please!!

For those that are interested...

The Guildford Council has given the go-ahead for this event.

The event will take place on Sunday 3rd May at 11:00am until 15:00 pm. Competitors will need to be there at 10:00 latest!!

We are already seeing a great deal of interest from competitors so if you can give a DEFINATE 'yes' and get the sponsorship, then please PM me on the SDF (I will check PM's on here but less frequently) - check the SDF Competitions thread for the download of the sponsorship form.

Please PM me your first name, age, which competition catagory (novice/Inter), where you are from (CLUB/CITY) and your top deadlift, squat and bench weights to help us keep a reasonable field and place people into the correct classes.

Best of luck to all, places are going quickly so dont hang around,

Many thanks
Matt (PINT)
