I was looking for some and was told to go to the docks, they want to get rid of old chains sometimes. Only helpful if you live by the sea really.

Rip off mate.

Best place ive found for price on new stuff are boat ancillary stores. sold as anchor chain.

Theres chain on ebay being sold as towing chain (comes with hooks on each end but easy enough to chop off) which is pretty cheep too.

Ive been to a few ship yards up my way and none of them have any surplus chain. Also had a few lads i work with looking around docks in Glasgow and liverpool to no avail so probably not as easy as you think on that front.

I was going to try crane/lifting companies next. With them having to have tested chains (or supposed to) they should have surplus from time to time.

Unless you know somebody who has access to chain or are very lucky its going to cost a fortune, even as scrap its worth a few quid.

I got some old anchor chain from the docks on clydebank. This guy had about 100m of it stacked on a pallet and it was all greasy. I just cut off what I wanted, cleaned it up and gave it a spray with some paint and now it lies on my garage floor getting used once every few months lol

these are 19mm

Also on eBay is 22mm long link anchor chain and 19mm short link anchor chain around £15 a metre.Email the companys and ask them if they got bigger chains in stock and how much they weigh per metre.

What are the weights/thickness of these chains that would be suitable for using in your lifts?
