![]() Old Age Presser Member 75, 7943 posts SQ 0, BP 200, DL 200400.0 kgs @ 105kgs Eq | Ok, I've just come back from a week in the Hebrides. Met one guy who was on my class in school. He was the bouncy, springy, elastic type, best gymnast in the class by a mile, got a job shimming up telegraph poles for BT (or whatever it was called then) when he left school. Now - so emaciated I didn't recognise him, chest pains, breathing problems, generally unwell, looks about 65! Called in on another good mate from school on the way home. He hills walks and teaches karate in his spare time, led an active, healthy life, sensible diet, all that... He's had one artificial knee and one artificial hip fitted, is waiting to get his other knee replaced, and is riddled with rheumatoid arthritis and oesteo arthritis and is on about 12 pills a day. He told me about another good mate from school - just about the best runner in the school. He's had heart bypass surgery two years ago and can't walk more than 100 yards without getting breathless and having to sit down. While I was up there saw the guy who had been the local hardman when I was growing up. And I'm talking super-hard. No one messed with him. He was chugging about on one of these motability scooter thingies and when he got out of it he was hobbling along on two sticks. And here's me, young at heart, in pretty good shape apart from my gammy knee (and that was a car crash) while everyone else I see from my youth seems to be fading away. Here's the question. Am I just blessed with good genes, or has all this lifting weights for the last 25 years actually done me some good, in spite of calls from relatives to 'stop before you hurt yourself'? Or am I old and decrepit myself and looking in Dorian Grey's mirror?

Gone and easily forgotten....... Member 331, 22298 posts SQ 185, BP 100, DL 230515.0 kgs @ 85kgs UnEq | What's the big deal about looking a year older than you are?![]() ![]() ![]() I think lifting weights with good technique can only help your body support itself better in later life. The runner, hard man etc, did they ever do any work to strengthen their posture, or injury prevention stuff in their lower or upper bodies? Most likely not. This sort of stuff we do whether we think about it or not. Guys that squat 200kg will have stronger knee joints than guys that don't, I don't think anyone can dispute this? If its a partial horrendous technique squat then it will probably do more harm than good sure, but on the whole, I think we are doing something right.

You don't stop doing things because you get old. You get old because you stop doing things. Think how much younger you'd look if you could power clean ![]() Or am I old and decrepit myself? Yes. ps did you kick the hard guys sticks away as pay back?

![]() Still got a little bit of strength Member 400, 22441 posts | Moderation is the key. I think my lazy approach to training will pay dividends in the long run. Stress avoidance is a big factor. Stress ages people. I believe taking a light-hearted approach to life helps in this area.

If I did power cleans, would I look more like you? And no, he never done me no wrong, I stayed well clear. But his eyes still looked hard, in a knowing sort of way, just wasn't worth the risk. And he had two brothers each nearly as hard. Probably hiding round the corner...

I think 'the runner' just stopped running, got a pretty high up desk job, and stressed himself near to death, took early retirement on ill health, and now sits and wonders why he gave so much to the job. My arthritic mate has been very active and is/was one of the top karate guys in Perthshire. I think his must be hereditary, I seem to remember his dad being similarly afflicted. I was actually struck by how lucky I was by comparison to the others with the hand I've been dealt.
