I'm no cardio bunny but like to get out and about on my new bike. It's a hybrid so should take a bit of rough riding. I stick to the Route 1 cycle path or minor roads but I am getting fed up of getting punctures. It's minute shards of glass in the back tyre everytime. I've tried changing my route so that I avoid known bad areas and I always dodge glass or thorns etc if I see them. My tyres are only 60 tpi, is is worth upgrading to 120s? And has anyone had their tyres filled with what I can only describe as expandable rubber solution? I've been told I can get them filled to stop the punctures but I haven't a clue! Any ideas?!

Funny you should mention this. I was looking at hybrid bikes earlier and there was one in particular, a carrera gryphon, and the tires were thin as f**k. As thin as a racer almost. I thought to myself 'f**k me, they're thin as f**k'.

So seeings as how these hybrids seem to be f**king s**t. And prone to punctures. I think I'll just get a £60 piece of s**t bike from sports direct and lob it in the canal when it breaks (in about a week).

I got fed up of punctures so I bought heavy duty inner tubes (they're really thick) and filled them with a puncture sealant called Slime. No punctures now for 18 months.

Simon if you're reading this I didn't buy HD tubes just cos I'm a fat t**t Grin

Before you buy new tyres try a few of these things:

You might be doing all the following things but in case you are new to cycling I have a list of things which I have found reduced the incidence of punctures.

The first one is the most important for stopping puncture, especially on racers and hybrids with thinner tyres;

Pump you tyres up to the maximum recommended pressure. You'll have to do this every couple of days as the top end pressure leaks out quite quickly. This will stop you getting a lot of impact punctures, these give your tube the two "snake-bite" punctures.

Every time you get a puncture run your hand along the entire inside of the tube feeling for any thorns, glass or flint( and remove it). If you don't do this you'll likely get another puncture as the offending object works its way into the tube.

Check the outside of your tyres before every journey for glass, stones etc and pick them out before they work their way in.

Obviously don't cycle through glass and thorns.

Some tyres are useless so if you are already doing all these things invest in a better pair. I'd say kevlar lined ones such as armadillos (not sure of name) would be a better bet than those gel ones that I think you are talking about.

That's the problem when it comes to bikes you have to buy a decent one and the ride will be decent and you'll actually want to use it!

I'm a bicycle mechanic and have been for around 3 years now, so iv had a fair bit of experience with punctures. From what iv seen slime (the rubber stuff you squirt into ur tyres to stop puntures) us gaaaaaaaaaaaaaaash! It doesnt really work, weighs loads, is messy and makes ur bike ride funny.

The thing you can do to make the most difference is get some new tyres.

The best ones iv seen are schwalbe marathons, or anything by specialised with armadillo puncture protection casing. They weigh a bit and are tough to fit but one of these two (sorry i cant remember which) you cannot physically push a drawing pin through. We tried.

U cud also coat the inside of your tyre and tube with chalk, and make sure your spokes on the inside are properly covered with tape, if u have a single wall rim. And only whack loadsa pressure in your tyres if they have puncture protection, other wise your just makin it easier for stuff to stab through n give you punctures.
