I'm starting a new job and I'm after a computer or tablet or something for when I'm out and about. Won't be at home much so need something for when I'm on the move. Will mainly be used for emails, spreadsheets, would also like Internet access wherever I am as I won't always be able o use wifi.

Any recommendations? People have mentioned the iPad 3.

Any help much appreciated I'm in the dark ages with technology!

Perosnally I would rather go for something like an ultra book, small form factor, tactile keyboard and you can slot in a USB mouse.

Macbook air - http://store.apple.com/uk/browse/home/shop_mac/family/macbook_...

Samsung series 5 - http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B008EJGJJU/ref=asc_df_B008EJGJJU115...

Asus Zen Book - http://www.ebuyer.com/392472-asus-zenbook-ux32a-ultrabook-ux32...

If your going to deal with spreadsheets then an ultra book/laptop is without question what I would go for. If you have a reasonable contract phone you can tether it to your laptop to allow you to use your mobile internet at no extra cost.

If your looking for a tablet then without question the Ipad is the best overall experience but it's expensive as f**k.

If you want something cheaper than the Nexus 7 (200 quid) or the Nexus 10 (320 quid) are probably the best apple rivals. IMO tablets are only useful for reading PDFs / light email answering / web browsing etc.

If you have to do any kind of content creation go for a laptop/ultrabook.

Cheers for that Marc. Very useful. Will have a look at those links. The iPad does look rather 'fiddly' and bloody expensive! Will be using spreadsheets for training plans and for payments etc mainly.

You either want a windows 8 tablet or ultra thin notebook, as Marc says Apple would be by far the best way but the cost is astronomical and I know how much of a tight c**t you are!!!!! The Ipad is f**kin ace and for your needs you would only need an ipad 2, I also think you can now get ms office for Ipad (office 365).

When people normally come to me for a laptop I nearly always direct them to Dell - pretty cheap and customer service is pretty good used to be f**kin awful). i'd stay away from HP purely from experience the number I've dealt with that have failed far out number any other manufacturer. Samsung are pretty good and PC World often have pretty good deals on them.

i use my Ipad for the following

Internet browsing
Buisning Account stuff for my company
emails

Laptop
Spreadsheets
Gaming
Detailled Buisness use for my company stuff
Contract buisness use.
my Wife uses the lap top for all here work stuff she does at home.

if i were you you could get yourself and really good laptop as Marc has mentioned and maybe a ipad mini, samsung galaxy note for when your meeting clients and you could run through pre made plans for examples and for taking notes. even a iphone or a windows 8 or a andriod type smart phone could be used too.

I don't think the spreadsheets you'll be doing will necessitate a laptop. If like me you'll be using it mkre for tables than spreadsheets a tablet should be fine, and much cheaper, as you won't be doing complex macros etc, just a few percentages really. Or at least that's my take on it for writing programmes anyway.

Personally since getting an iPad I almost never use the notebook, and with a choice of an iPad 3 and an iPad mini, the mini is almost always first choice. Light, portable, easy to use one handed (on the bog,in the bath ...)

As has been said for simple spreadsheets an ipad is fine. If you will need to do lots of data entry then you probably need something with a keyboard with a number pad.

Lots of ideas and options thanks guys!

I forgot to mention I share a laptop with the other half so I was going more toward a compact laptop for being out and about and at home.

VG - if you can manage with a tablet then I'm going more towards one of those now. I was over complicating things with spreadsheets etc lol. Just some simple tables for training plans sounds good to me. So ill basically be using it for emails and tables. Adam said you were looking at a tablet. Which one were you thinking of?

I guess it depends how you get on with touchscreen.

I can do everything my work ipad can do on my phone, although it is a bit fiddly with the smaller screen, but in both cases I try to avoid writing anything of any length on it as I hate tryting to type more than a couple of sentances on a touchscreen.

If i was just browsing the net nostly reading then a i might pick up the ipad, but if I am actually doing anything involving typing or spreadsheets etc i always go with the laptop.

I do quite like the look of the new windows tablet with the clip on keyboard that acts as a cover, but I havent had a chance to play with one yet

I havent yet found out if a tablet will be up to the task but I've done a fair bit of research and a couple of other coaches at work use tabs.

I will mainly be using it for:
Email
Maintaining my website
Facebook / twitter
Browsing
Recording and playing back videos (technique etc)
Hopefully using something like dartfish to analyse movements
Writing programmes in table form
Writing programmes in table form with some simple percentage calculations
Some light word processing
Storage will be via drop box as I have wifi at home and work

I'm not an apple man, I use android and samsung already, with the samsung tab2 and samsung 8.9" being likely depending on which I can get the best deal on. Neither should cost more than £250.

I looked at google 7, looks very good but no rear facing camera so couldnt use it for filming coaching sessions so discounted that.

I use my IPad for business. I frequently have to create spreadsheets, tables and board level presentations.

The beauty about the iPad is that there is a quality app for just about everything you will need.

I use QuickOffice Pro and Numbers for creating various spreadsheets and other documents. I use Keynote to create presentations.
You can open any Microsoft office document on the iPad and can save all of your documents in Microsoft Office format if you want.

iPad mini is about £250.
